Mainly because it was what we used when on the Internet at school (the school browsers were all set to open up straight to Yahoo), so I automatically used it at home as well.

Digital (may its memory be for us a blessing) was waaaaaay ahead of the rest on this ca. '96/'97 or so. Beat the pants off of Yahoo.

There was also Norhtern Lights, very powerful enging that attempted to make search engines a play-for-pay operation.

The village elders may remember Webcrawler, and a few others.
