Adds balance too, correct me if im wrong but other than Mcleod/Livermore he is the only other left footer? I love his silky stepovers, he is the white Patrice Evra, he wears a short sleeve shirt with gloves and he is a scouser.. I love him!

Great positional play, He can slow down a right winger & fullback by knowing who to mark & when. Tonights game was a classic example, We were being ripped apart down our left side until he came on and he snuffed them out and that was they're game plan finished.

He took off a defender after 20 minutes, I know a lot of managers who would not have made that decisive move so quickly. McNulty is clearly (far, far) better so I imagine the only reason he didn't start was because he isn't yet fully fit. In which case, how did Gus make a "big mistake"? He sought to protect a player coming back from injury, he played a make-shift left back who has by common agreement had a couple of good games and he then subbed him very quickly when he realised that he was getting flayed. Couldn't ask for much more than that.

Totally agree that with Jimmy Mac starting we would probably have won the game, but can't really accuse Gus of a big mistake IMO.

He gives us a player who can comfortably pass the ball from defence to midfield or who can run with the ball from defence and turn things into attack. When Colchester marked up our midfield, our defenders were reduced to passing to each other, and not in a composed way. Either that or playing speculative long balls to the left-wing which just gave the ball away.

McNulty is a class above this level and proved it again last night. We looked as different side when he came on. His attacking skills are superb as is his calm, assured defending.

Erm El-Abd was taken off because of a cut which couldn't be stitched up in time, nothing to do with tactics on Poyet's part it was taken out of hands

Still not sure if he can defend

I agree to a point. However rather than the usual hoof out of defence we have been used to which invariably results in the ball coming back to us and having to defend again, his composure on the ball often results in an attack in our favour......releiving pressure on our defence (which can only be a good thing!)

I was thinking that must be the reason, but the way McNulty was running up and down the line I'm not sure there could've been any doubt about his fitness. He certainly wasn't in doubt, he didn't try to get into the game gently.

Couldn't see that from Block J. Assumed it was bold management.
Indeed, and I don't know what took Poyet so long to make the sub, that's what caused their second goal (as we had 10 men and they scored after getting round the back on our left).
