Well, the goalkeeper obviously is key, he keeps the goals out (or in, if they're playing for the Albion )

The back four are also vital, that doesn't need explaining. A lot of stick has been put on Virgo and Elphick in the past, and many have concluded that this is the reason for some of our losses.

The midfield covers the defence, and also relies of the back line to distribute the ball to them. They also provide support to the strikers, and also, in some cases, attack themselves. Three jobs in one.

The strikers win games, as they score the most goals. Without a front pairing, or a single striker, the game would be too defensive. Again, vital.

I've been thinking what it is that makes a team successful for some time now, and looking at our team, we seem to have adequate cover in all 4 lines of play. Yet we find ourselves at the wrong end of the table. Something must need strengthening, and although it is easy to blame the defence and the keeper, we lose as a team.

:)

You've forgotten : Team spirit, leadership and some sort of starting line up consistency to name but three key factors in any successful team.

I suppose factor may be the wrong word. But the main point is the area of the team. Of course leadership and desire is important, even more so than skill in many cases. But you hear of a fantastic back four, fantastic midfield etc, and one has to be more important than the other.

I think it was Bill Shankley who once said every great team is built from the back. Get the defence right and you may only need to nick one goal to win a game.

The problem is that good teams are fluid. The strikers come back and help in midfield and defence, defence move forward and help in midfield and up front.

As an ex- striker I'd have to say the main goalscorer, without him you don't win enough games to progress, so a 20+ a season man is needed.! The Keeper important obviously but whether we had Kuipers or Smith in goal wouldn't make much difference without us scoring.
