132 X (23 X 43) + 6 - 4 X (7 X3)

then 23X43 =989

and 7X3= 21

therefore
132X989+6-4X21= 2741550

Always always 'do' the calcs in brackets first and then sub the value back in. Doing calcs is like reading abook .. from the left.

I must get a life

yes then learn maths cos its not like reading a book at all

The brackets would only make a difference if they enclosed a + or - sign. And I should know, I did it at A Level. This is one of the first times I have used my Maths A Level since.

absolutely

so its
132 x 23 x 43 = 130548
4 x 7 x 3 = 84

130548 + 6 - 84 = 130470

It's 130470.

You do the multiplications first and then the addition and subraction.

And I should know, I did it at A Level. This is one of the first times I have used my Maths A Level since.

Listen to this man. He, like Artois and many other people has the right answer. It is most definitely 130,470. Anyone who says otherwise is quite simply WRONG. And very possibly a little simple.
You do it like this...
1) Multiply out the first brackets: 23 x 43=989
2) Multiply the brackets total by 132: 132 x 989 = 130,548
3) Add 6 to the total: 130,548 + 6 = 130,554

4) Multiply out the second brackets: 7 x 3 = 21
5) Multiply the second brackets total by 4: 21 x 4 = 84
6) Finally subtract 84 from 130,554: 130,554 - 84 = 130,470

And like a good maths student i've included all my working out to gain extra marks even if i get the answer wrong. Which i haven't.

I too have an A-level in maths. Wow.

I take the insiders answer to mean that Dick Tight, martin perry and everyone else at thwe club can't be trusted. They've told us a bare faced LIE!!!!!

Dick Tight out! FG in!

would put my life savings on it being 130470, the first set of brackets are irrelevant, it is the last that are important.

Not true.

The last brackets didn't need to be there either.

This is stupid it's, an ambiguous sum and could be read in a number of ways.

NO it isn't and NO it can't.

The laws of mathmatics say there is only ONE way this sum should be read.

Insider is definately right.

think you're taking the mickey now!!!

various people with maths A-Levels/Degrees agree on the answer

its primary school stuff.

type it in Excel.

I passed it through our database server, I think if Intel and MS had cocked up on how to do simple addition/muliplication when designing hardware/software then we'd have got a lot worse than the millenium bug

130470 innit
Having fed the question into Excel and accepted the suggested correction to the formula, up pops the answer ...

130470

And Bill Gates is the richest man in the world and Tony Blair has just made him an honorary Knight and EVERYTHING.

Who are you people to question Excel?
