What has happened to Brighton?

Maybe it's just a case of familiarity breeds contempt? Have lost count of the number of times, three at least this year alone, where you're chatting to someone on a plane or booking into holiday accommodation, and the person you're chatting to's eyes light up when you say you're from Brighton and you find out they've been here to study or to do a language course or to just have a fun time. Have never met anyone from other than here with a bad word to say about the place.

This is true; I work in London and travel a lot and I can only think of one occasion in the last 25 years when I've told someone I live in Brighton and they have been negative about it. And even then it transpired she was actually talking about Shoreham where she'd worked for 2 years.

A few years ago we were up at my sister in law's house, staying over for the weekend to meet her new other half. At the time she lived in a little village just outside Towcester in Northamptonshire.

On the Saturday we did two things. We did a quick bit of shopping in Milton Keynes in the day. I remember walking in to the shopping centre and thinking "wow, this is just like Churchill Square". Then, that night we went out in Northampton, where my sister in law's new beau took us to Frankie and Bennys at Sixfields. I remember thinking "wow, this is just like the Marina, only with a football ground at the end instead of the sea".

I happen to like Brighton despite the Marina and Churchill Square and visit either only when absolutely necessary, normally due to a demand to shop in a shit high street store from my wife or play tenpin bowling from one of my kids. I suspect [MENTION=5729]sir albion[/MENTION] and [MENTION=2393]Uncle C[/MENTION] would take the Marina and Churchill Square and dump ever more shit pastiches of them on top of any area that looked like it might contain Green voters or a few too many bicycles. If I had my way I'd knock down both and replace them with cycle hubs, homeless centres and arts studios just to f*** off the sort of people who like the Marina.

I quite like the Marina. Its not going to set the world on fire with the choice of outlets but i suppose there are factors like rent which determine who is going to be able to move in.
My old man is wheelchair bound and as much as he also likes the quirkiness of Brighton it really isnt very wheelchair friendly, not because it doesnt want to be its just the geography, parking and the access to older style buildings that some bars and restaurants inhabit make it quite a ballache of an experience.
The marina is a welcome oasis for us in this regard, and we can easily take in a film and casino to boot.It has its place to play in Brightons make up just like everything else, something for everyone somewhere.
And those restaurants arnt all that bad, they wouldnt exist if they were, but if you havnt yet discovered the massive reductions most offer through their apps you will certainly feel a pinch in your wallet.

Most other seaside resorts don't get anywhere near the income Brighton gets and it's but time these green buffoon councillors pulled their finger out to protects its Image before it slides even more into a deprived shitehole

Its is funny that this thread was started by an out of towner as i found a similar response from people on my most recent visit to the UK.

Those that no longer live in Brighton told me it was a shit hole and that i wouldn't even recognise it these days. "I hardly bother going any more" was oft quoted. This was much different to those that still lived in the city who still loved the place, most especially was my mate who had recently moved back form London via Shoreham who once again fell in love with the place. My view was that it seemed to still be the vibrant,interesting, seedy wonderful place that I remember.

yep definitely agree with this. I don't visit the marina that often but it's main draw is surely 'convenience'. We live in Kemp Town so the Asda there is our nearest large supermarket for starters. We'd also much rather use the cinema there than the one on West Street and if we do that we'll be able to find somewhere to eat fairly easily that vaguely caters for our needs

plus theres the UV crazy golf

I'm not saying the Marina is anything spectacular and I certainly doubt many people flock to Brighton just to visit it, but it is a decent outlet for local residents

Rusty railings
Boarded up buildings everywhere
Homeless people scattered everywhere
Weird scruffy people
Graffiti galore
Buildings that are desperate for a lick of pain and a clean up
It has gone backwards with no funding what's so ever and clearly is a city in decline considering it's on the door step of London and has over 10 million visitors a year spending a fair few whack.
So why is it so bloody poor?

To many students?
Can't attract the right business's ?
The greens?

Really sad to see the way it's going and will only get worse.Many other cities and towns in the south have moved with the times and look clean and well maintained yet Brighton reminds me of Blackpool behind the mile....Facking depressing and full of poverty mostly !!!

Not that this has anything to do with Brighton as a place but seems sort of relevant to post something that happened a couple of weeks ago.
I was in my local branch of The Range down here in Plymouth, wandering around the aisles looking for stuff.
I clocked this woman right down the end of one aisle talking to a store assistant.
She was between 45-55 and stood out like a sore thumb, bright blue hair, motorbike jacket, tartan skirt that was too short with leopard print tights and bright red Doc Martin boots.
My immediate thought was, she looks like she is from Brighton.
As I walked down the aisle towards them, the lady was asking the store assistant for a number to get a taxi and directions to get somewhere.
She said " sorry to ask you but I am not from here, i'm from Brighton"
True story that.

Then the locals voted for Brexit.

So, no more funding from the EU. Won't get any money from the Tories either, no matter what the Tories promised.

I know the Cornish can be strange to say the least but i could not believe that so many voted leave.
Our governments have more or less totally ignored Cornwall and the south west in general, EU money has gone a long way to make Cornwall what it is today, with infrastructure, and many other things.
