What happens if......

Say for example you lose your job this September and you have been paying for your season ticket each month by direct debit and have no choice but to cancel your payments....

At what stage does the season ticket become null and void, just interested as to how this will work and what the club have put in place to stop people cancelling payments half way through the season ??

If you miss one payment is your season ticket blocked ?

Are the club covered should individuals decide that half way through the season they can't be bothered anymore and cancel there direct debits ?

Nothing announced yet, but I would have thought the club will need to be pretty firm on this. You are contracting to by a ticket for the whole season, not buying tickets each month. If they simply cancelled your ticket then in theory someone could sign up for a season ticket, pay monthly and cancel after the first game. That way they would guarantee themselves a ticket for the first match at Falmer.

It wouldn't surprise me that if you cancel your DD part of the way through the year you might find the club chasing you for the balance of the whole ticket. They may not do so for whatever reason but I would have thought they would be entitled to.

In theory I would think the club COULD sue for the balance outstanding as the contract is for a season ticket for the whole season.

In practice I would guess the club would cancel you season ticket after the game you have paid up to. With a waiting list it wouldn't be worth the expense of debt collection. The could of course cancel it within a short period of time and take the unused matches as an admin charge

Agreed, but you thought all of this may have been covered prior to people signing up to buy there season tickets...

Not that it's going to happen, but you could have a situation where the football is terrible, rooted to the bottom of the table at Xmas and people decide to simply cancel there payments.

The contract terms are quite clear and the emphasis is on the purchaser to uphold the payment scheme signed upto.
In cases of 'hardship' the club will take a view however, the balance of payments is in the favour of the club.
By the start of the season a 3rd of the season is paid for by and by September 1/2. You always are paid up 4 to 6 games in advance which is a good notice period (1 monthish) of suspension of your ticket; easily done as these are now 'smart cards'.
Unless more than 10 games are available, for the remainder of the season the seat will be sold as a match day release seat until the commencement of the next season.

They're putting a compromise scheme in place whereby if you do run into financial difficulties for whatever reason, you can have the price of your season ticket halved until the end of the season if necessary.

It does does however mean that you have to leave the stadium at half time during each game.

not sure of the clubs stance in non payment from a dd but if you were to cancel a yearly contract dd say from a gym ect they would 1st ask for the full amount owed then if you dont pay that it will certainly harm your'e future credit rating for sure ,so in that sense i cant see it being any different than the contract with brighton and hove albion.

I always thought that for DDs, both parties had to agree before they could be cancelled. Otherwise, surely the club would have allowed standing orders.

Its your account, therefore you are completely at liberty to cancel any d/d set up on it - the club cannot "force" you to leave that d/d in place.

Of course, cancelling the d/d will have consequences that the club will incur, whether that be cancelling your season ticket and pursuing you for the remainder owed, or whatever. But what you do about the d/d is between you and your bank, the club can't stop you from cancelling.

Although its brilliant for us to be able to budget for our STs over the course of a year, can't help but think that the club has opened itself up to a whole new world of pain, trying to administer 20,000 direct debits. Unless they outsource the whole admin side of course.

There is a point here which can be used in the wider world ...(I didn't take up the 12 month offer so I am unsure how this was setup at BHA) BUT if the payments were set up as a Direct Debit (i.e. a direct debit mandate completed and sent to your bank) the customer can instruct the cancellation at any time unilaterally HOWEVER if you ever setup monthly payments by using the debit / credit card details the customer has not rights to cancel the arrangement and if it is cancelled without agreement of the creditor you can be pursued for this payment and you have no rights!

I didn't realise that. Does that mean that the 'Direct Debit Guarantee' doesn't apply if you set one up by giving details of your current account's debit card?
