If we're talking about incorrect pronunciation, I've heard loads of travel news presenters refer to Ansty as Ans-tee (see also Ardingly).

It's a y as in "eye" in these Sussex parts! Not as in "tea"!!

PS I used to live in Seaford and we called it Seaf'd, not SeaFORD.

So there :p

Oh, and is it Pyecum or Pyecooombe?

Now this has moved on to pronunciation, there are two Sussex places I don't know how to pronounce.: Slaugham - which could be pronounced many ways - and Burpham, is that BURP-ham or BURF-am, I suspect the former.

I'm Sussex born and raised, yet I've never heard anyone pronouce these.

And is the first syllable of Offham, near Lewes pronunced as Off or Oaf?

My mate was coming down from Sheffield and I phonedm to ask where he was and he said he had just gone through Bal-coom-bay. Took me ages to work out he meant Balcombe. You can guess what he was calling Mooz-all-coom-bay.

I've always been led to believe it's BURF-'em.

The George and Dragon there is a cracking little pub with some great beer and THE best pub food I have ever eaten (although it ain't cheap).

No offence Les, but is your mate a bit of a dick?

But how do you pronounce Fowma (Falmer)?

And what does the name mean? Mere = natural pond or boundary stone?

originally: fæl mere

Re Offham, it's always been Off-ham to me. But I was told once that some of the posher locals prefer Oaf-ham. I've heard two northerners pronouncing Lewes as "Lews".

Where do you put the stress on Hurstpierpoint?

If you stress the "pier" and not the "point", you are stupid and wrong :lolol:

I always thought it was Off-ham too but in the John Harvey Tavern last year, I heard a bunch of locals say Oaf-ham - they certainly weren't the posh set though.
