How do you define "Pop" Music. For me neither Bob Dylan or Pink Floyd would count.

Single - Heartbeat - Buddy Holly
Album - Out of the Blue - The Electric Light Orchestra

Best song ever written, regardless of genre, is Dylan's 'Like a rolling stone' and if you don't agree you're wrong :D

Thread title IS a bit misleading as I was thinking of best POP song but basically best album of any genre. I'd also argue that Like a Rolling Stone is a POP song, it spent weeks, months even in the pop charts in the USA and here. There are plenty of fantastic singles of the 60's and early 70's that couldn't be included if you are thinking of Pop as something trite, happy and catchy.

Looking at your choices, I was very close to nominating Rave On as the best pop single and also considered Mr Blue Sky.

I think both my choices(Dancing queen, and Thriller) are the best of the pop genre, but i dont really like either of them much. But they do seem to be popular with all ages, so it probally makes them the best. My daughter's friends love Abba, dut i dont know if itis ironic.

Single depends on which way the wind blows. Often it blows toward Different Drum by The Lemonheads, but today it is mostly blowing in the direction of:

Blue Boy - Orange Juice

Album: Entertainment - Gang of Four

Canterbury
Friday I'm In Love - The Cure
Velocity Girl - Primal Scream
The Last Time - The Rolling Stones

Albums are harder, I'll go with Parade - Prince & The Revolution.

I'm happy to stick up for Haircut 100. Milk Film is my personal favourite, but all the singles are great.

Difficult to choose because it's so dependent on the definition of 'pop' and anyway I'll only change my mind tomorrow but:

Single: 'Regret' - New Order or 'The Diary of Horace Wimp' - ELO
Album: 'Pet Sounds' - The Beach Boys. Or 'Ocean Rain' - Echo and The Bunnymen.
