A Spitfire pilot, so I could take on Me 109's in close quarter combat over the fields of Kent and Sussex.

Sadly when I grew up they were flying Phantoms and lobbing missiles at aircraft they could hardly see so didn't bother*

*Almost certainly not clever/fit/gung-ho enough either :(

Although on the bright side I found out I wasn't colour blind

I wanted to be a journalist and that's what I became.

My son has difficulty deciding between an astronaut, a builder, a taxi driver or a chef but as he's only five I think he's got a bit of time to sort himself out

I wanted to be a bandsman in the Army or Air Force. Unfortunately I wasn't quite good enough, which royally pissed me off as my mate was, did join, and as far as I know is still in the Army as band master.

Fighter pilot for me too.

Failed the interview by answering "Troops out", to the "What would you do about the situation in Northern Ireland" question, (This was in 1977).

By that time, I too had realised that the RAF weren't flying Spitfires anymore, so I wasn't too miffed.
Those "Commando" comics have a lot to answer for.
