skoda octavia elegance 1.9tdi 130 bhp... 60mpg.. got it after a visit to prague where every taxi driver seemed to have one. i was impressed with em then and wanted one since.

Pretty sure that has the same engine as I have in my Golf, think VW and Skoda (plus Seat) share quite a few common parts...all of them very good cars in my opinion. A few years ago I looked at a Seat Leon, think that at the time if you worked out the cost divided by the miles per hour it did (something like 140) it worked out rediculously good value.

Not owned a car since 1989.

On the odd occasions when I need one (3-4 times a year, usually for holidays) I just pop to that nice Mr Hertz down the road.

WAY cheaper, no hassles with maintenance, no insurance costs to worry about...

Win, win, win.

Toyota Avensis T-Spirit 2.0 Diesel. Nice car to drive very comfortable, massive boot to fit pushchairs and stuff in and fairly economical as well.

Not as fun as my previous cars audi A3 and TT but having kids means they had to go.

Cheap to run, reliable and pretty powerful for it's size. I managed to get 60MPG out of it yesterday but driving like that is no fun
