By Spencer Vignes

Fantastic insight into one of the more unique seasons in our history.

Better Off Dead by Tom Wood, my last of the 8 in the Victor the assassin series. Have absolutely hoovered through these at a rate of 100s of pages a day. Well written stuff.

Next up, the Orphan X series by Gregg Hurwitz.

I am about half way through, I struggled a bit with the first hundred pages but to be honest had been too busy to relax into the book. The story has really picked up and I am planning to finish it over the holiday. What I found a bit hard also was the dysfunctional relationship between Lyra and Pan and the fact that she seems a pale shadow of her younger self. I will keep you posted. What are you reading at the moment?

Apologies if we already had this conversation.....what did you think in the end? Getting very dark...

If there's any Sci Fi fans looking for something to get stuck into something, I'm reading Red Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson. It's the first in a trilogy about the colonisation of Mars. The attention to detail and understanding of the science involved in the process is fantastic but not overwhelmingly techy, and makes the whole thing very believable.I can't speak for the other 2 books yet, but the first installment is superb.

Thanks for the heads up.

Mrs Jakarta bought me Wings on my Sleeve the autobiography of Captain Eric 'Winkle' Brown, Fleet Air Arm Fighter pilot who evolved into the Worlds Premier Test Pilot.

He flew 487 different types of aircraft, made 2407 carrier landings including several first 'type' landings, flew virtually all of the Luftwaffe & Regia Aeronautica as well as several Japenese types during and after the war, then tested aircraft all the way up to McDonnell Phantoms in the 1970's.

Shot down several German Bombers flying off Escort Carriers while on FAA duty, was a survivor when his Carrier was sunk by a U-Boat along with 11 crashes while testing planes.

Aside from that, a bit of a dull read.

Magnificent reads, the C4 series Any Human Heart was superb as well.

Just closing in on finishing Love is Blind then Ice Cream Wars and Stars and Bars only two left to read by Boyd - he is an excellent author

It’s been so busy that haven’t found the time to read which is a bit crap but will give it the attention it deserves over the next couple of weeks. One of the things I am doing is using Audible and listening to books at work. Currently listening to 21 lessons for the 21st century by Yuval Noah Harari which is simply superb almost dare I say it life changing but definitely mind changing, the world is changing at such a rate that probably 99% of the population runs the risk of being redundant and irrelevant as algorithms, AI and machine learning becomes more advanced and the power of super companies eclipses governments. Would be interested to hear what others thing of audiobooks and what people recommend.

Just coming to the end of 1966 by Jon Savage. A very interesting month-by-month account of that year with the focus on music.

Have you read Sapiens , a brief history of humankind.....hard going but most explanatory as to how we find ourselves in the mess we are in.

That's been in my "to read" pile for about a year now. I keep meaning to start it. How do you rate it?

i would say its heavy going but definitely worth reading .....you may find it changes how you view the world , depending on what your view is currently.

not very "entertaining" but 7.5-8 / 10 for all round info.....i doubt i would read it again although i probably should.

I think that's why it's been sat in my "to read" pile, because it looks fascinating but I wasn't sure how entertaining it would be. I had a feeling I would need to prepare myself for it. I might just bite the bullet and try and blitz it.
