'Lila' is part of a trilogy isn't it? Was going to give it a try but will avoid now. Will stick with The Poisenwood Bible instead, cheers

I've no idea, sorry. I'd not heard of the author until the long-list was published. Please do take my review with a pinch of salt! It is just my opinion.

Still reading The Black Death. Very good but its taking an age as I keep coming out in boils and sweating profusely, probably psychosomatic

The Man Booker shortlist was announced yesterday:

Marlon James (Jamaica), A Brief History of Seven Killings
Tom McCarthy (UK), Satin Island
Chigozie Obioma (Nigeria), The Fishermen
Sunjeev Sahota (UK), The Year of the Runaways
Anne Tyler (US), A Spool of Blue Thread
Hanya Yanagihara (US), A Little Life

I matched with 4 of the 6, the judges going for the unreadable (IMO) 'Brief History of Seven Killings' and the downright terrible 'A Little Life'. I'm still sticking with my own presonal favourites 'The Year of the Runaways' followed by 'Satin Island' and I hope the judges do too. I'd be interested to know if anyone else has read Little Life or Brief History... and what they thought of these 2 books.

And books that I'm currently reading...

I'm back to working my way through the Lee Child 'Jack Reacher' series. Finished 'The Hard Way' last night. It's a bit formulaic but good fun and a very easy read. And after I finished my Man Booker longlist challenge I finally got round to reading Haruki Murakami's 'Kafka on the Shore'. After so many mediocre books this was an absolute joy, I just wish I'd gotten round to reading it earlier, much earlier. His style is so warm and engaging and the quirky but quite brilliant plot moves at a canter. This is definitely a book that I am going to re-read in the future.

The Killers of The King by Charles Spencer. It's about how Charles the Second tracked down and gained revenge on the 150 or so Parliamentarians involved in the trial and execution of his father, Charles1st. Not many got away and many had VERY grisly deaths.

A game of thrones by George RR Martin, love the TV series so thought I would read the books, bloody epic too

Apathy For The Devil by Nick Kent.

If you remember Nick Kent from his days writing for the NME then give this a go. It only covers the seventies but it is a real insight into his life and the behind the scenes lives of stars like The Stones, Bowie, Led Zeppelin, Sex Pistols. He doesn't pull any punches. Excellent read.
