Has anybody read anything really good with a post-apocalypse plot?

I've googled it etc, but nothing really stood out as being something I was looking for!

Have you tried Shute's On the Beach or McCarthy's The Road ? They're probably the most famous two - if they're not what you're looking for, what do they lack?

I've just finished reading "The Book of Evidence " by John Banville. Brilliant writer, brilliant book.

Have moved on to "The Urth of the New Sun" by Gene Wolfe - a science fiction writer like no other.

Hadn't heard of On the Beach but the plot summary looks to be like something I may read. I have tried to read The Road but just couldn't really get into the style of how it was written, no harm in giving it another go though!

Riddley Walker which Silk mentioned also looks like something I could immerse myself in.

The reason for me asking about the post- apocalypse is that I'm a big fan of the video game Fallout and I guess I'm just interested in how people react, or how the author perceives them to react when the world has effectively gone tits up.

It's a fascinating genre.

Finally got round to reading The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Enjoying it so far, but good grief it's hard work keeping track of who's who in the Vanger family

The other writer you could try is JG Ballard - his novels often take a natural disaster as a theme (Drowned World, Burning World, Crystal World etc)

Prime Cut by Alan Carter - a debut crime novel based in mining boom rural WA by an Englishman who's been living here for ages, resonates for me, good read.
