Since when was Nirvana indie?

The thing is [oh, and well done for managing a whole sentence without winding anyone up or adding any insults] 'Indie' is a very loose term.

It originally referred to bands on small independant labels, irrespective of the actual style of music.

Because a lot of those bands were guitar bands 'The Smiths' on Rough Trade, 'Stone Roses' on Silvertone, etc, the term became associated with that kind of music. It is certainly used as a catch-all to all of Brit-pop, despite many of those bands being signed to large labels.

In general it seems to now inlcude anything that students like, with the exception of dance and R'n'B!

i'd like to present a list that shows both my understanding of the genre, my refined taste and with a couple of obscure ones thrown in for a bit of edge. sadly, the horrible term 'anthem' means POP songs. my list (and by no means my favourites) would probably be:

oasis - c & a
suede - animal nitrate
blur - girls and boys
pulp - common people
james - sit down
verve - bittersweet symphony
smiths - how soon is now?
stone roses - i am the resurrection
killers - mr brightside
strokes - last night

yes - i realise that the majority of these songs are utter shite. but then i think that's the point.

hmmm. go on...

Don't take this the wrong way TiD I just think you kind of didn't gauge the thread. It was a fairly easy going thread about indie music and then you posted what was quite a pretentious post and basically slagged off the music that people posting like.

Although I will say one thing I didn’t really think of it as anthems, more just my indie top 10.

The thing with this is I'll do it, but if I did it again in a month's time half of them would have changed.

I'm not actually saying that The Charlatans are better than the Artic Monkeys, or that The Cure are better than the Kaiser Chiefs, but as 'Indie Anthems' these songs are much more important to ME.

not really anthems then, are they? the point is that they are not personal. they're lighter-in-the-air songs that define the age and have mass appeal.

I think your own personal list probaably says more about your age, and where your were in a particular era, than it does about the particular merits of the music.

it surely does, grandad.

i hope not. i think most indie fans would agree that often the most popular songs are not the best. i was just saying that that was what i thought too.

indie top 10 and top 10 indie anthems very different things, methinks.

that would be telling. i like the warm blanket that is the anonymity nsc provides. (saying that, i'm sure your guess wouldn't be far off!)

I agree, but I think the thread was just more about the nostalgia of the music than anything else.

With regards to your age I wouold have said mid 20's. But I may be wrong. Just your music selection and you once commented when I mentioned Robinskis.
