The thing is [oh, and well done for managing a whole sentence without winding anyone up or adding any insults] 'Indie' is a very loose term.
It originally referred to bands on small independant labels, irrespective of the actual style of music.
Because a lot of those bands were guitar bands 'The Smiths' on Rough Trade, 'Stone Roses' on Silvertone, etc, the term became associated with that kind of music. It is certainly used as a catch-all to all of Brit-pop, despite many of those bands being signed to large labels.
In general it seems to now inlcude anything that students like, with the exception of dance and R'n'B!
