as said, football doesnt need to be at the Olympics, it has its elite event in the World Cup. then theres the professionalism aspect, i dont think there should be any other professional sports at Olympics either.

It was once put to me that you should think of the significance of an Olympic medal compared to what else can be achieved in the same sport. For many sports an Olympic medal still counts as the highest achievement possible but for lots of late entry or re-entered sports there are already higher honours to play for. Football, along with Tennis is one of those sports.

Ergo, an Olympic football medal is not worth a bean unless it is competed for by every country and also, only open to amateurs ie. Non professional footballers. Cherry picking Beckham or Giggs renders it a farce.
