I went to the club shop at lunchtime and was surprised that the outside of the stadium is untouched from the end of last season. I thought Paul Barber had said that there was going to be an upgraded fanzone with toilets etc built over the close season, or maybe I miss heard that... Anyone got any insight?

he said (in Dec 2022) that The Tunnel Club, Improved Signage/An "albionisation" of the stadium, a fan zone, external video screens, toilets etc would be done over the next 18 months and that work would start this summer and be completed in summer 2024.

The external video screens ARE going in in the next few weeks. Work colleagues of mine are installing them.

That's a little bit sanctimonious, being sniffy about other people's drinking preferences. For many people, the match is an opportunity to meet up with their mates and have a bit of downtime from family and work commitments. (Yes I appreciate that Brighton is more family-oriented then most football clubs but this is still true.)

The fundamental issue here is the law that restricts beer consumption during the game, and 'within sight of the pitch'. Frankly, it's an absurd and oppressive law that needs repealing or rethinking. For many years I lived in Germany and was a regular Bundesliga attendee. Throughout the entire game, people around you are popping out to buy 4, 6, even 8 half litres of beer to fetch back for their friends in the same row/area. The plastic containers with their long handles make it quite easy to carry at least 4 in each hand. Result is that there's no huge halftime queue for beer, and the concourses are much less crowded and therefore safer. The club makes far more money and the punters are happier. Each member of a beery collective is likely to have to visit the bar only once during play (but OK, perhaps more to visit the loo!) For those who can't bear to be away from play, you also get mobile beer sellers moving around the stands with a beer tank on their back, dispensing beer to people in seats for a small premium.

I'd love to see this trialled in the UK with the strict proviso that any abuse of the concession e.g. plastic glasses being chucked on the pitch, would lead to an immediate suspension of in-game beer sales and the banning of culprits identified.

It's quite wrong to blithely state that "That is and will always be the reality of the situation." Why should it always be the reality? It never was prior to Thatcher's cynical law change, and it isn't and never has been in nearly all footballing nations across the globe. Bad laws can be changed. It's inhumane, infantilising, and downright unsafe to force people to buy and glug beer during a 15-20 minute period in the middle of the match. The law has been in force for what, 25-30 years or so now (?) and it's time it was at least reviewed and possible repealed.
Anything that encourages people to pop in and out during the match gets a huge thumbs-down from me. Could hardly be anything more annoying. I’m all for being allowed to take a drink in before, after and at half-time but keep the bars shut during the game.

I imagine most of the immediate work will be on the stadium rebrand
The change in signage has , i think, not been approved by the planners yet - if you dig around the Brighton council website. The Tunnel Club is going to be open in August, strong rumours that some of the elements of the fanzone is starting this summer (eg: video screen), but a lot won't be i think (eg: abolishing the bandstand, and the food outlets opposite the NE corner) and a general clean up (the roof, the repainting of the Albion logo in front of the shop) is underway.

Any other sightings , rumours ?

Yeah they hadn't touched that whole area, other than the repainted logo. I would imagine with 3 weeks until the next match the main focus will be on stadium rebranding.

Following todays club shop visit I can confirm the following exclusives:

* North Stand (east entrance) floor was being painted grey as I walked past

* Current training kit is for the US tour only, a new one will be coming out for the domestic season apparently

* ongoing internal work being undertaken in west lower concourse (couple of big full walk in skips outside) probably related to the extension of the Dug out bar area or tunnel club

* club crest on floor outside Dicks repainted.

* No goalkeeper kit in stock

* Igor Julio - shirt name and number unknown

* Roof has been cleaned

* No other noticeable external changes / upgrades outside (believe it was an 18 month plan though)

Roof doesn't look much cleaner from outside (walking down from Woodingdean), but I actually like the green tinge, helps it blend in.

There's a temporary toilet outside NW corner (near the big logo). Queue was big, but not as big as the one for the shop that stretched down the ramp to the station when I went past.

Igor is enormous, absolute unit.
