[Albion] What about this for a solution to this year's football

Cheshire Cat

The most curious thing..
Play the remaining league games at the start of next season, and to avoid a fixture pile up make them also count for both this season and next season (except where involving promoted and related teams).

As we all know. Many teams don't want this season to end because they are either chasing Promotion to the division above. Or European places.

Others want it declared Null and void because they have the possibility of being relegated to a lower division.

Given that we now know that this Pandemic could run for 3 to 6 months and beyond. So rather than Rush to play games behind closed doors in the coming months and risking the health of players and workers needed to get games played.

What if we were to cancel next seasons Football altogether and use next season or what would be left of it to finish this year's football season at a leisurely pace ?

Your thoughts ?

Biggest issue i can see with that suggestion is that it will mean a greatly reduced income for a lot of clubs further down the football pyramid, they can't play out a season and promote / relegate if they have nowhere to go to (promotion to the PL ad having to wait a season to get there with no games until then if they play out this season and hold another)

If they just play out this season's remaining games, they will have missed out on the equivalent of a whole season's income yet will still have expenses to meet such as their players wages, etc which won't just disappear

Those are the clubs at greatest risk of going bust and rely on match day income which will be lost by playing this one season over 2 years.

They will also suffer if the games are played behind closed doors as they will have no gate receipt, merchandise sales, etc.....

Not an easy problem to solve imo and a lot will depend on how long this goes on for

What have a former Canadian rock band got to do with it ?...................my idea would be for the current bottom three in the Prem to play the current top three in the Championship on a one off play off on a neurtral ground, same applying down all the leagues...................ain't gonna happen, though, 'cos this season needs to be declared nul and void .

Simple ! Just need to play some summer football.

2020 - finish 19/20 season.
2021 - Play Season from Jan - Nov, with summer break for Euros.
2022 - Play Season Feb - Nov - then Qatar World Cup in Dec.
2023 - Play Season Jan - Sept
2023/2024 - Play season Nov 2023 - June 2024 - Euros in Summer
2024/2025 - Back to normal

You forgot the Tokyo Olympics, which will impact on at least one of our players ?

I've trawled through this thread and what no one has mentioned is the mental/physical attitude of the players in all this . Bernardo, for instance, has voiced his concerns about his family in Brazil (quite rightly imho) and overseas players up and down the leagues will have the same concerns. Players are not training together due to Corona symptoms....................is it fair to expect them to run out whenever with all guns blazing like this never happened ? I think not !

I've been thinking the same for a couple of weeks.
But then I thought of a better option.

This season must finish.
If it runs into December 2020 so be it.
The 20/21 season can be cut in half. Top 10 19/20 play each other twice. The bottom 7 that were not relegated and the 3 promoted teams play each other twice. Only teams in the bottom 10 can be relegated. 21/22 back to normal please!

18 game season for top seeds and bottom seeds.

I think the insane timing of the 2022 World Cup makes this sort of scenario quite likely. Of course, the best result of all this would be the abandonment of the corruptly-awarded Qatar idiocy and an alternative staged in summer in the USA, which should have been awarded the 2022 tournament. Even Blatter voted for it.

I don't think you get a choice really. What is your solution? Carry on as normal with our heads on the sand just so you can get as much football as your selfish heart desires!?

Suggest you go back and read the opening post and try again

Fwiw I think we should either make this season null and void, bring up Leeds and WBA with no relegation as per PB’s suggestion, or start a new season carrying forward this seasons points.

Once we can start playing again I’d like to see a longer season than 9 games

Where is the selfish or head in the sand in that?

Agree. 19/20 season will definitely be played out with some form of mini league in 20/21. The Welsh Premier League already do a form of what you suggest.

There is only one solution; the 19/20 season is null and void. Throughout the leagues. Can we please stop feeling sorry for Liverpool, Leeds and West Brom. There are hundreds of leagues up and down the country in lots of sports and all will have the same disappointments.

The only thing we should be considering is how much football can we play in a new 20/21 season , which we will only know when this virus situation ends.

All other daft schemes (particularly the OPs scheme ) should be confined to where they belong....in the bin.

There will be no resolution to this season no Olimpics no Euros no golf no normal sport for the next 12 months as a minimum I predict the growth of self filmed loan participant sports being streamed and online betting companies financing these individuals, I can see free climbing, fishing becoming online spectator sports with bets being placed on all manner of things

Just dismissing this season at this point is daft. Nobody knows if everything will be back to normal by August. You could end up losing two seasons. Therefore the only sensible decision is to wait and see. Don't rush into voiding this season now.

This.

Abandon the season now.

Focus planning on next season, and clubs not going bust in the meantime.

Yep the players are going to need a hefty pre-season to get up to match fitness. You'll be working in their home gyms to keep the fitness levels up but won't have played football for weeks/months. Plus the psychological side of it too like you say which is a huge part in any elite sporting performance.

Someone made a good point about the mental state of players if football returns behind closed doors. Particularly those with families abroad or those who will have tragically lost loved ones.

I’ve read this morning about plans to re start the season in June and play over 6 weeks behind closed doors.

This is all well and good but this is assuming NO teams have players with COVID-19 which I find extremely hard to believe.

This isn’t about finishing the season right now, this is about people’s safety and controlling the spread
