Anyone remember the days when this was sung in the North? Back in the day it was such a rarity for us to have a player representing their country, that we were obliged to sing about it. Now look at our squad. I suppose now it’s a case of ‘We’ve got multi internationals’

Dunk was probably the 2nd or 3rd best English CB 4 years to 18 months ago, then ironically finally got picked while slipping deeper down the list. The lower he got, the more minutes Blazer seemed to give him as well.

If GP takes over in October, which may well be the case, I feel it would open up for a lot of Brighton players. Even someone like Danny Welbeck could get another look in. Potter likes having a few olden ultra professionals in his squads.

This is true. But he is better than slabhead who keeps on getting picked despite him being a one-man disaster zone

Certainly possible, but way too early to call that. Dunk's been left out of the latest squad, that's all.

It took so long for the scales of Maguire to fall from Southgate's eyes. Unfortunately (from an England and personal perspective) Maguire got to the point where he was simply unpickable even for Southgate, and at that point only did Dunk start to get a look in, even though he had been performing better than Maguire for a good 18-24 months previous to that point. Had Dunk been playing for Chelsea or Tottenham during that period he'd have earned another 15-20 caps, easily.

Why would Potter take over in October and not have taken over immediately if he was the first choice?

Some English media wrote about Chelsea paying him up until October so it could be something connected to that.

I genuinely can't see the FA thinking it's fine that they don't have the manager they want because he needs to be paid in full by Chelsea. Southgate reportedly paid £100k a week as England manager so you'd imagine it wouldn't be such a devastating drop for Potter.

If it's going to be an English manager from club level, it'll be Howe, though most likely to be Carsley unless it's a complete mess this week. If it's not going to be an English manager, which reports say could happen, then we'll wait and see - it is pretty well reported that Pep is the number one target when his contract ends at City next summer. Carsley is one a 12 month rolling contract, that finishes at the same time as Pep's deal at City...

Potter will be Everton manager by Christmas. He was extremely close to joining Leicester this summer and apparently he pulled out over the same concerns that led to Maresca happily leaving (no money to sign players, dual PSR punishments hanging over them). Had no issue around losing out on his Chelsea money for a much worse offer than Everton. Keep them up, lead them into the new stadium with new owners. Great job.

I think the FA are in no hurry and happy to give Lee Carsley a chance. He would be the cheapest option and did well with the U21. Downside is that he's kind of already in the mix - he probably knows a lot of players and vice versa, its not a "fresh start" (no Ben White for instance) like it would be with someone from the outside.

If everything work out great they might go with Carsley but otherwise, Potter or Lampard are the natural options. Eddie Howe would obviously be a strong candidate but I don't think he wants it right now, and I don't think they are going to pay £5m to get him out. Some other day.

Whatever happens, Graham Potter will not "be Everton manager by Christmas". He's not moving his life from Hove to Liverpool to try keep that thing up (and get sacked if he fails). I don't think he was close to joining Leicester either, or Feyenoord. I think there are maybe 10 clubs in the PL/Championship that would really interest him. Everton in their current state isn't one of them.

I think Everton are far more likely to appoint a young, open-minded coach who will provide an opportunity for their academy players to flourish.

Agreed on all of this.

On Potter specifically, I thought West Ham or Palace might have gone for him when Moyes and Hodgson left. Perhaps they did and GP didn't want, at that stage, to walk away from the money Chelsea were/are still paying him.
