Not in Whitechapel
I can’t be arsed to read the entire thread but has the classic “lack of atmosphere due to no music/sport” line been trotted out yet? It’s normally a NSC staple with whoever posts it seemingly being unaware that if they need music or sport in a pub to have a good time then it heavily implies that their friendship circle is dull as f*ck.

“Spoons is terrible because there was nothing to distract me from how tediously boring me and my friends are.” :lolol:

If both of your points above are true then clearly your original statement that they pay £3 or £4 less than their competitors is wrong.

Thanks for confirming it. :)

The post you quote indicates a national living wage (over 25’s) of £7.38.

I don’t know how long ago that wage was current but would guess about 7 years. Other posters then compare Wetherspoons wages in 2015 with current wages in other venues achieving the poster’s desired effect. For balance, these were minimum wages last week, they went up a few days ago.

£8.91-23 and over
£8.36-21 to 22
£6.56-18 to 20
£4.62-Under 18
£4.30 - Apprentice

That table was posted by Tim Martin in 2019, in response to newspaper reports that Wetherspoons only paid minimum wage.

Look after their employees you say?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-52018360

He branded a lockdown as over the top in 2020, didn't pay furlough and told all his employees to go and work for Tesco.

The last time I went into a Wetherspoons, my husband sent his meal back and refused a replacement (knowing what chefs can do in a kitchen). That was 6 years ago. It wasn't snobbery, it was unfit to eat.

Wetherspoons did furlough their staff during lockdown.
Sorry to hear about your husband’s meal, but this can happen anywhere. I have, on occasion, sent food back in 4 star hotels.
My wife and her sister had a perfectly acceptable steak and chips and bottle of Malbec in a Wetherspoons the other day, before going to the theatre in Wimbledon.
They serve heaven knows how many meals, coffees and drinks every single day and I am pretty sure that the vast majority of customers are happy with what they get, but things can and do go wrong on occasions.

When someone asks for rare steak, sending it out looking like boot leather isn't just going wrong.

The article I linked(and various others) said he didn't pay furlough, or if he did after those were published, it was because of pressure.

As I said, Wetherspoons did furlough their staff and an over cooked steak is hardly the culinary crime of the century. It is a mistake ,a cock up, a boo-boo. These things can happen in a kitchen.
I wonder how many steaks they have served that were to the customers satisfaction?
Dear oh dear!

I posted a link saying he didn't pay furlough.

I was told he did. without any link or proof.

No, I don't like him. He was exploiting his staff, making them put out Brexit propaganda in the pubs etc

https://inews.co.uk/news/consumer/wetherspoons-tim-martin-brexit-propaganda-beer-mats-251920

The Spoons Workers Against Brexit Facebook page has attracted over 1,000 followers which organisers say comprise Wetherspoon’s staff and supporters. The group is urging workers and members of the public sign an online petition demanding the company withdraw all “propaganda”, pay staff the Living Wage and offer trade union recognition.

Personally, I won’t drink or eat in a Wetherspoons for the same reason I don’t read the Sun or the Mail. I also don’t buy Warbertons bread, or Dysons products.

I try to avoid knowingly buying any product made by a company who’s owners politics I fundamentally disagree with.

It’s my choice.

The article you linked was published on 24th March and the company released a statement on 25th March saying that it would introduce a new scheme that would see staff paid 80% of their normal wages.

Wetherspoon's paid furlough for the whole time it was in place.

So he did the right thing after pressure.

My original post was not about the owners of wetherspoons or whether they paid their staff during covid but about the beer they are selling during there current beer festival.

I’ve just read all four of the articles you provided and not one of them actually says he refused to pay furlough.

He told his staff to go and find jobs at Tescos. He didn't even want lockdown saying it was over the top.

But he didn’t refuse to pay furlough which I thought was your actual point.

“employees were paid as normal on Friday 27 March, and have been paid on every Friday since.”

Thunder Bolt, we know you don’t like Tim Martin, but really, I don’t think you’ve ‘ truly hit the mark’ with your posts on this thread.
Let’s all be friends and meet for a reconciliation steak and chips in a restaurant of your choice.😁

Personally, I would never eat my fish and chips if they were served up in last weeks copy of the Guardian.:D
