[Film] Westerns

Those of us of a certain age - old, very old, still alive just - will remember the plethora of westerns on TV. My favourite was the Lone Ranger with Clayton Moore(?) as LR and Jay Silverheels as Tonto. During that TV era you could watch any of the following :
Gunsmoke, Champion the Wonder Horse, Rin Tin Tin, Boots and Saddles, Bonanza, Maverick, Wells Fargo, Range Rider, Rawhide, Laramie, Wagon Train, Tenderfoot and probably loads more. Definitely more entertaining than today’s crop of reality, look at me, look at me, television crap.

There was another one, Cheyenne, from the late 50's, don't think I ever saw it but my Grandad used to tell a joke from when it and Rawhide were both on telly. Works better spoken than written, but here it is; There were two cowgirls, one wore knickers and the other didn't, Cheyenne and Rawhide.

As TV is being added to the thread, my all time favourite was "Have Gun - Will Travel" staring Richard Boone.

How The West Was Won is on bbc2. A great movie.

Was always fairly 'meh' on westerns.

And then along came 'The English' and showed America how it should be done.

Stunning series.

Agree with many of those already quoted, but another shout out for The English. Great mini series.

Need to add the recently released Horizon from Kevin Costner.

Will be interesting to see how this saga continues when the other parts are released late in the year.

Monument Valley is stunning and wouldn't be surprised if the film didn't pick up awards for the cinematography.

Having a bit of a western-a-thon. Saw The dead don't hurt last night . 7/10 bit of a slow burn starring and directed by Viggo Mortensen but pretty good .
Now watching Horizon . Will report back

Didn't know that.

The films really deserve to be seen at the cinema, they won't have the same impact watching at home on a much smaller screen.

People obviously these days prefer the franchise super heroes series rather than Westerns.

I was gutted to see that none of the cinemas in Brighton were showing Horizon - it was literally a lunchtime showing in Worthing or Horsham twice a week. Was really looking forward to seeing it on the big screen.
