I wonder why they release players when the manager is leaving. You would think that any incoming manager would want to look at what he's got first

They've either got to negotiate a new contract deal, or release the player. You can't just keep them on past their contract end to see what the new manager thinks. No doubt they felt happy with RH's view.

Let's hope we don't try playing the long game again - and end up losing Mattock to another club. And please don't tell me that Gus probably has someone better lined up.

At the last poll Mattock was 91.25% yes, but not including me. I thought like Chris Wood, we could do better, but it would not do much harm.

The one thing he lacked was the ability to surge forward and overlap the wingers. Thing is, if Buckley's infront of him, there's no real need too as he's a direct winger himself, Calde was most effective when he had Bennett infront of him, as Bennett had the ability and willingess to do the defensive cover work when he did (Buckley doesn't, and that's not a criticism, just different players). He's a perfect fit IMO. If we had an Ashley Cole style left back, and Buckley or KLL playing left midfield, we'd be torn a new hole every week on the break.

He did this fine on several occasions I recall. The times he didn't attempt to were likely tactical. Agree he was the best loan signing, would be very happy to sign him. Strangely a West Brom fan I know thinks he's complete toilet, but that's Baggies for you (he supports Crawley as his 2nd team, what a fool).

He bloody well got forward when he shouldn't have done. He cost us at least one goal doing this. He was OK going forward. It was his defending that was not up to scratch.

I think Mattock would be a great signing.

On a side note, it does worry me though when Gus talks about the importance of having the players "who know how we play". As if a few extra weeks at the BHA training ground/in the team turns a half-decent loan player into a permanent signing shoe-in. Surely the way we play isn't THAT complicated? Yes, I'm looking at you Reyes.

Some short memories on here. WBA nicked Mattock off Leicester who were not exactly gutted to get rid of him. Compensation to WBA would be peanuts and if they offered him a contract they risk getting stuck with him.
Then consider this is a player who missed games for us whilst on trial, because he nicked himself shaving. His agent should be on his knees at Gus's front gate right now begging for his boy to get something for next season.

Why on earth did you have to bring that Palarse sponsoring mutt into this - possibly the worst, most annoying advert on tv from a company who sponsored the worst, most annoying team in the world. Oh yes, and sign Mattock immediamente Gustavo.

I can't understand why some people are so downbeat about our chances of getting him. He didn't even get a look in at West Brom so no premiership team will look at him (I doubt) so I would have thought it's fairly likely we'll get him?

Couldn't agree more, every time I see that irritating mutt, I speculate how far I could boot it's wobbly bonce. I reckon I could easily clear the half way line from a goal kick.
