I'm not sure what people are not understanding about this Combat 18 thing...no-one is saying they WERE there or organised it etc.
What 100% DID happen was that there was a big rumour in the hours leading up to game that they were going to be there to make it worse... even 'Build A Bonfire' alludes to the rumour...

As it turned out, they were not present at all!
f*** sake this is bollocks :nono:

Seriously mate WTF don't you understand about it? Basically you are saying either:

1) many fans massively misheard the rumour and actually people REALLY heard the phrase 'combat JEANS'

OR

2) many fans are just basically LYING and making it up...

Why can't you accept the honest truth that there was a rumour (albeit entirely evidently false) in the hours leading up to the game that they may have been coming down.... or do you seriously think you are so omnipresent that because YOU personally didn't hear it, it can't be true?

i dont think anyone is struggling with the concept of what a rumour is, or the fact that they exist, and one may have existed on this day.

what people are struggling with is 12 years on people are still banging on about a rumour with absolutely no basis in fact. somebody made something up a long time ago in a pub or their over-active imagination, and some people insist on presenting it as fact or at the very least repeating it, twelve f***ing years on. I think you are mistaking what you see as obtuseness for straightforward exasperation mate, with the greatest of respect.

Read Tony Hyland's comments in 'Build a Bonfire'. He answers all the questions. No it wasn't Combat 18. It was a small group of Albion diehards who planned it because they wanted to get the match abandoned therefore getting the club on national news and highlighting the plight to the national media. The intention was to snap the crossbars so the match couldn't be restarted. And although many fans hated it at the time, people like Liz Costa, Paul Samrah etc all go on to say that the York City game was the turning point as it was the catalyst into all the other forms of imaginative and groundbreaking fan actions and protest that culminated in Fans United.

No probs at all with your reply, mate!

I do think people are struggling a bit with the rumour concept though. I'm not really banging on about it though and never have done as i know C18 weren't there. The reason i think it's been mentioned is down to the request at the start of the thread. ie.. this is what some people recall from the York game. I'm sure no-one actually believes C18 were there.

I always thought the combat 18 rumours started after the event not before. Inspired by the media

Hallelujah. Thanks for injecting some sense Steve and clearing up the C18 urban myth (good old Tony Hylands, top man to have in any protest!). In addition, for those that have commented at seeing 'crusties' and punk types involved on the day, well that was no surprise either. Those that went to the concorde bar meetings would recall just such a character at one of them (mate of John Baines) effectively acting as a 'direct action' consultant (use D locks to attach yourself to fences/goal posts was one bit of his advice I recall). He was certainly not your stereo type Albion fan (bit like Fagin I recall). The presence of him and his kin at the York City protest didn't surprise many of us at the time. May not have been Albion regulars, or even liked football, and no doubt anti-establishment, but they were sympathetic to our cause and helped us on the day.
