Were you there? Goldstone pitch invasions in 1996 and the final final game

The people that run onto the pitch were not Brighton fans just idiots who played into the hands of Archer & Bellotti. That was the first & only time I've ever been truly ashamed to be a Brighton fan and I can remember standing in the north stand with around 2/3rds still in there booing those on the pitch.

It's also worth remembering that the trouble on the day was organised by Combat 18, the same group of thugs who caused the trouble at the Ireland V England game a couple of years after.

oh dear, utter bollocks mate.

yes - I apologise for that remark to those who were genuine fans..But then you've never said anything stupid on here have you?

that really is a half hearted and barbed apology if ever i heard one. you still manage to get a pop in at someone on the end too. not very classy.

mind you you will probably claim it was combat 18 that put that bit in without your knowledge.

guys just regarding the Combat 18 side of things as others have said, I heard at the time that they were involved - don't shoot the messenger!

About the pitch invasion against York itself...We ended up with a point deduction the following season and nearly getting relegated to the Conference. If it weren't for that last 45 minutes against Hereford, we'd have been relegated and therefore playing right into the hands of Archer & Bellotti. Now I'm sorry that some of you appear to think that was a good thing, but I don't and so far as mainstream non-footballing media publicity is concerned...It didn't make a difference and that's why we got a point deduction and if I remember rightly and a fine and a suspended sentance.

I know most of you don't agree with what I've said and I'm sorry...I meant no offence. I don't think I deserved the comments I got...I was there at every home game and most away games that season, unlike some of those, who I know weren't even old enough to go who have slated me so I do (most of the time) know what I'm talking about.

you are clearly deluded:nono:

To be honest. The bloke said something along those lines.

It wound me up enough to swear at him.

He was really posh and had no idea about football.

I couldn't believe that a 'newspaper' with a circulation of over 4 million could be so wrong. Just think how many people - who were unaware of what was happening - believed what they read that day.

Das Reich is a cock, but i have to agree with him on this one...YOU ARE A BLANK AND FULL OF SHIT

My memories of those two games:
1. standing in the North Stand and listening to the blokes next to me saying "they're late, they're late!!!" meaning the organised pitch invasion from the West Stand was a few minutes late

2. that grass from the old ground was crap! the bit I ripped up only lasted a couple of weeks in my garden before it died :)

3. the bundle at Hereford after the Reinelt goal was fun :yahoo::yahoo:
you know all about cocks then .................:dunce:

As others have said supaseagulls post was utter utter garbage.

Its a bit like the police following albion fans round the country as they had been told we used to sing seig heil, when in fact it was seagulls

Also the press reported the large Union Jack at the Ireland v England abandoned game (which I was at with lewes seagull) with a swastika on it, it was infact the crossed hammers on a West Ham flag!

Dont believe what you read/hear, report what you see yourself

I was proud of Albion fans that day and at every other direct action, if we had all sat back NSC would not exist today as our club would not exist!

I heard all the whispers in The Hove Park Tavern before hand and the regimented geeing up of the troops the Landlord said he would phone the beeb at the appointed time I often wonder if he did!!!

I remember from The North spotting the 'leaders' in unfamiliar territory in lower west stand terracing then THEY DID IT THEY ACTUALLY DID IT.....................WELL DONE THEM. I sauntered on after five minutes or so and sat the the north stand penalty area and listened to it on Radio 5!!

Look guys, i think some on here are taking my remarks completely out of context and I'm sorry if anyone is upset or I've caused offence, I really am.

If I could take back the post I wrote then I would.

York City game: I was there but did not go onto the pitch. I stood in some kind of bemusement in the North Stand trying to work out in my head how it had come to this.

The final game, I was in the South East terrace, the only ticket I could get. Storers goal was probably the most bananas I had ever gone about a Brighton goal in my life up to that point (a certain Mr Reinelt surpassed that a week later). At the end I ran onto the pitch with everyone else, got myself about 1 square inch of turf, now long gone, then slowly made my way into the middle of the North Stand, sat down on my own, and cried my eyes out.

Were you standing with me, SF and Zeff for the final game, I can't remember ?

In the field
I was only 10 at the time and was not allowed to go to the York game; I can't remember the exact reason but it was some motherly edict I imagine. I did manage to get to the Donny game due to my Uncle pretending that he was taking me to the King Alfred for a swim! We were in the West Stand I think and I just remember Storer's goal going in and the whole ground erupting.

I don't mind admitting that I was too young to totally understand what was going on but I knew that something terrible was going on and that we were in danger. I remember being incredibly bemused by the "Scum" headline and my dad attempting to explain the situation to me.

Looking back on everything now, I am incredibly proud to be an Albion fan and I have the utmost possible respect for every fan who actively fought to save the club. If I had been older at the time, I have no doubt that I would have wanted to be involved.

That'd be where my old man was. Said it was one of the best, yet most surreal days at the Goldstone.

Fancy answering a few questions?

I'm doing a piece on the bad old days for college and could do with a few quotes from fellow fans who were there for the sad sad scenes.

If you're interested and online all I'd be after is a few short answers to questions about the atmopshere and mood during the final days of the Goldstone, and any Bellotti or Archer experiences would be a bonus.

PM me or reply here if you wouldn't mind helping out.

Chars

I was there too, pm me the questions you have and i will be happy to answer them

Anyone else go to Walsall away after our protest. There was a loads of Police at the front of our end. The Walsall fans ran on to the pitch at the end and came over and saluted us.

Yes I was there, another of those truly emotional and unforgettable days to be an Albion supporter. The 'love in' at the end was incredible and I think from then on I knew we had the support of real football fans but, to underline the point, the Walsall fans would never have appreciated what was going on at our club if the York game hadn't have been abandoned and received the media attention it did.
