Odd one. To go for it so dramatically then retract it. Instinct to go down I guess. Ref within his rights to show a yellow.
I wouldn't say he went for it dramatically - he anticipated a challenge, so was ready to make the most of it, then ended up diving which 1 second earlier was probably not his intention. He should be applauded for his decision to say it wasn't a penalty, and a yellow card would be a message to players that should they dive, they should keep quiet about it.

Yeah, but why dive in the first place if he's only going to own up to it later? Pointless IMO.
As above, it's unlikely he planned it even a second in advance. It happens quickly - he saw a challenge coming, so he probably thought the defender would make light contact, and he went down in anticipation. Only when he realised the defender pulled out did he suddenly not want the penalty.

... he was later found beaten up in an alley. When witnesses were questioned they expressed surprise that he had been hurt as he had been out for a drink with his teammates....

So refs CAN change their mind then? Interesting when sometimes it becomes very apparent to a ref that he's gotten a call badly wrong, yet there's always the impression there's an unwritten rule that the ref cannot change their mind once a decision has been made.
