Welsh anthem urged for cup final

The Welsh sports minister has called for the Welsh national anthem to be played before Cardiff City play in the FA Cup final.

Rhodri Glyn Thomas wants "common sense" to prevail and hopes the FA will allow Land of My Fathers to be played alongside God Save The Queen. The Bluebirds meet Premier League side Portsmouth at Wembley on 17 May in their first final for 81 years.

The FA said the matter was currently "under consideration".

"I hope the FA is going to be sensible about things because there will be great disappointment in Wales if we're not allowed to sing the national anthem," Mr Thomas said.

In 2003, a similar anthem row erupted before a play-off final at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff between the Bluebirds and Queens Park Rangers. Eventually neither God Save the Queen nor Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau were played and the clubs could choose their own song.

Cardiff opted for Men of Harlech, while QPR went for Pigbag's 1981 hit Papa's Got A Brand New Pigbag :lolol:, a fans' favourite.

But Gwyn Davies from the Valley Rams supporters club said he did not think Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau should be played.

"I don't think we should distract from what's going on - on the pitch," he said.

"There's no prouder Welshman than me but this is not the time and the place. It's not Wales v England, it's two teams in the English FA Cup final".

Personally, I have no problem with playing the Welsh national anthem for Cardiff.

As long as they play the Ghanaian and Nigerian ones for Pompey.

I think that people will find that Portsmouth will not be "representing England" at Wembley, any more than Cardiff City will be "representing Wales".

I guess they'll probably play "God Save the Queen" if the Prince of Wales shows up. They usually do.

why? its not the WELSH f.a. cup final is it?

johnny jigsaw

"My life's in pieces"
They can play what they like, as long as they don't RUIN "Abide With Me" again by drowning out the fans with some crappy, oversinging opera fool. Completely spoils one of the highlights of Cup Final day for me.

The irony of this of course is that Cardiff will probably have more Englishmen (Roger Johnson, Trevor Sinclair, Peter Whittingham and Darren Purse) playing at Wembley than Pompey (David James, Sol Campbell, Glen Johnson).

And as far as I can see, despite the flag-waving stuff, Cardiff's team yesterday contained a single Welshman, Aaron Ramsey. I assume Joe Ledley was injured.

I have not checked, but as i understand it there are 4 welshmen in the cardiff squad, that is the whole first team squad.

Paul Parry is another one, and there's probably a youth team goalkeeper in there somewhere.

Interesting to read the Cardiff 6-0-6 site. A large proportion of their fans seem to against the idea anyway. Maybe they're worried it will be drowned out by the intellectually challenged minori....sorry...majority of Portsmouth support.

I live about 15 miles from Cardiff, and all the cardiff supporters (including all the very new Cardiff supporters since they have got to the final!!) we know, all agree it should not be played.

Barrel of Fun

Abort, retry, fail
Another piece of PC wanking.

Political correctness is SUCH a lazy term for the mind-numbingly boring.

How about this? It is a cup final, big occasion and we happen to have a Welsh team playing in it. The Welsh Anthem is by far the best of all the home nations and I can't see a good reason why it should not be played. Why does politicshave to come into it?
