Meanwhile 29 Tory MP's are accused of cheating their way victory in the 2015 election via an orchestrated electoral spending fraud. I wonder what will be done about that...

What about people who don't have a passport or driving license ? My mate's mrs has neither; all the bills are in his name too.

Surely just a move that disenfranchises the poorest and most vulnerable in society? Photo ID may be fairly cheap but is still not a necessity or within the means of some of the most unfortunate. A NI number is needed to register to vote so it's not as though there are even huge windows for voter fraud, a move that will do more harm than good I reckon

Hopefully people will just be able to use utility bills and/or a free voter ID scheme will be provided otherwise a massive kick in the balls for people who don't have and don't need a drivers licence or passport.

Will all be a complete waste of time and effort if there is not close scrutiny in the voting area. The habit of electoral officials turning a blind eye on certain minority males escorting their wives to the voting booth and pointing out where to put the X is becoming very tiresome!

Not just the Tories. All the main parties have been accused of over spending at the 2015 election which is the possible reason for lack of impetus from any party to fully investigate the claims. It is a little misleading to claim this is a Tory only scandal. Regardless of where the blame lies though it is not, in my opinion, as important an issue as defending the principle of one person, one vote.

It always surprises me that ID isn't required when voting. It would seem to me to be a basic requirement of a democratic system.
Always found it odd you don't even need your polling card. Just tell them your name and address. Anyone could give those details and vote, when you turn up later you can't vote. I guess it doesn't happen otherwise there would be uproar

First, those nasty Tories change the boundaries to help equalise the amounts of votes it takes to elect an MP in each constituency then they suggest people should prove they are who they say they are when voting .... outrageous.

Interesting that they're apparently going to trial it in Birmingham, one of the areas with a high suspicion of electoral fraud.

If you are not going to vote then its not a problem.
Missing the point entirely. If you're not going abroad, it's not a problem, but should you be expected to pay £70 just to enable you to exercise your right to vote? No, of course not; identification should be provided free, or at most at minimal cost, for those not needing a passport or driving licence.

The most curious thing..
It is not exactly hard to get a passport...
They aren't particularly cheap either.

A standard adult first passport or renewal costs £72.50, or £82.25 if you use the Post Office’s Passport Check and Send service. Child passports cost £46, or £55.75 using Check and Send.

Another move to bring in ID cards by the back door?

Surely they could bring in something simple like a Citizens card or something. Just a basic ID card for those without a passport or driving license who has no intention of ever needing either

Do you think there won't be an option for people without driving license or passport? Apart from anything else, your registration on the electrorial roll, or proof of your NI number, both of which are free. Once either of these documents have been used to place a vote, then they can't be used again. Add into that maybe blue dye on your finger as you leave the polling station, there's plenty of ways that pretty much every other country in the world does this, I'd expect the UK to be able to work it out.

Or do you condone electrorial fraud?
