It's very important to be able to defend ourselves but we have an offensive capability that far exceeds our needs we are no longer a major player in the World we have no Empire to defend, a Commonwealth that no longer looks to us and is likley to disband when the Queen passes on, we are no longer part of the EU and its future role in the world as a superpower and a UN that has not moved with the times and has been devalued by the actions of Trumps USA. What we do need though is a defensive force that is capable of defending our islands so build up the navy and Airforce a smaller army, scrap the aircraft carriers not needed after all we live on an aircraft carrier along with our nuclear weapons and increase our cyber defences.

agree with all that; but the carriers can do a lot good all around the world, humanitarian stuff and whatnot, given we've already paid for them, and the aircraft

I see the future where all folk from all nations and creeds, sit harmonious in parks, plaiting daisies into one another's hair singing Neil Young.

So if there's nobody we're defending ourselves from, why do we need WMD? I don't think people would claim Germany is struggling to defend itself and they lack WMD.

Yesterday was Trafalgar Day when Admiral Lord Nelson beat the French & Spanish fleets off the coast of Spain. A glorious victory for the Royal Navy.
When you look at his crew, there were 22 different nationalities serving in HMS Victory. Britain has always been a multi cultural society.
HMS Hood was sunk in 1941 with a crew which included Polish, Czech, Belgian and French refugees in her make of of 1418 personnel. Only 3 survived.

You have all the answers, so how about, a couple of questions........

A) of these nationalities, how many in the records were V compared to P?
B) of these nationalities, how many were nations in 1805, eg Italy has only existed since 1870 ish.
C) if Britain has always been multicultural, what was it’s cultural mix in 1805, how many cultures were flourishing eg demographics, Mosques, Temples, cultural groups?

As far as C) is concerned I read an article recently about songs of praise, and that when the BBC commissioned it in the 50s there were only 15 registered mosques in the entire country.

That’s an anecdote of course, I will look forward to the evidence from you of the contrary.

Italy as I indicated previously was not a nation till 1860, so no one on HMS Victory would say they were Italian, they would be, Piedmontese, Genoese or Napolitan maybe.

Similarly Germany was 1870, Brazil was 1820 so it isn’t making any historical sense and is therefore factually incorrect.

It identifies Americans, Canadians, Scots, Irish, Welsh and Manx as separate nationalities and these individuals would be British essentially. The Americans on board especially as these would have been V or P, which gets us to the harsh realities of life in 1805.

Ships of the line were floating coffins and needed an ongoing supply of men to man them, from lansmen carpenters to those that could operate rigging on ships of the line. Those dropping dead in between ports of call would need to be replaced, whether by voluntary means or impress.

It’s not some wonder of multiculturalism that there are various individuals from around the world on board, in the same way it doesn’t mean those jumping aboard ship in Caribbean ports were “Jamaican”.

The trouble these days is people don’t get taught history..........they get taught empathy.

west coast of Eire used to give fresh food to the german u-boats. Lets face it England had been generally unhelpful to the Irish historically.
