I believe they're thread tags, they've been popping up for a long old time as far as I'm aware.

They're the mods' secret comments to each other about the original poster of the thread.

Anyone can add tags to a thread. One or two users do so quite a lot

More interested in your display though - are images always broken like that for you?

No, I was in an area of poor signal quality so the page was taking a while to load/not load. Normally loads as you would expect!
