Let's just focus on winning tonight and not get too carried away. If we can put a run together, it's ours for the taking, but we have to go one game at a time.

If we won every game we will get 99 pts. If Hull and Boro win very game except against us and draw against other contendors (including Derby) Hull be on 99 pts and Boro 99. (to be checked)

So I think it might be realistic to look for Hull and Boro to lose before the last game of the 46. It is only in our own hands if we score a shed load of goals w/o reply.

Burnley would not be far behind on 96 on the same criteria. So we've got to beat them at home.

If all the games between contendors end in draws. Boro 100. Hull 99. Burnley 97. Brighton 93. Derby 92.

Include Sheff Wed and it becomes Brighton 92, Derby 90. Sheff Wed 89.

You have forgotten that Middlesbro have both Hull and Burnley to play so Middlesbro Hull and Burnley cannot all win their remaining games except against us. We have both Burnley and Hull to play. Plus the top teams have the bottom teams fighting to avoid relegation so some times as difficult as against the top teams.

I've got them down as draws. What is a wild card is Brighton, Burnley and Boro have to visit Birmingham.

Last line should be Brighton 91, Derby 90, Wed 89. Home to Burnley is the big 'must win' at all costs game.

We playing Hull 3 times in the league this season then and Middlesbrough once?

I normally hate the 'take one game at a time' cliche but it really is so true at the moment. A game against Bolton can be as tough as a game against Hull in this league. My only want is that CH sets up to win games from now on, at this stage of the season a draw is 2 points lost.

About time we finished 2nd.

When was the last time we actually achieved a 2nd place finish?

1988 I believe, behind Sunderland in the old Third Division.

Notts County had looked NAILED on for 2nd spot for most of the season, but they completely blew up on the run-in (including losing at home to us over Easter). We won all our games in April, sneaked 2nd spot in the 45th game, and gloriously held on to it on the final day v Bristol Rovers to go up.

LOVED that season.

It was indeed.

We seemed to have messed it up by drawing at Chester, but then Walsall failed to win their game in hand ???

Something like that anyway.

My favourite season as well ( other than perhaps this one! ).

Yup, we were 2-0 up at Chester, and they came back to draw 2-2. I was at the Goldstone watching the Albion Ressies beating Lewes in the Sussex Senior Cup Final that day, ear glued to the radio. Looks of sheer disbelief amongst us when we heard WILKINS score twice, then head in hands when we blew the lead.

According to that physio bloke we finished second the other year, when Southampton won the division :dunce:

Then there was Pardews Reading, when they finished a street behind, us and yet his team (who we took 4 points from) were still apparently the best team in the division.

Managers HATE finishing behind little old BHA don't they.

And some Chesterfield fans claimed they would have won the league if they hadn't had the brown-envelope points deduction. Despite the maths proving them wrong.

Was travelling back from Chester on the M1 when we heard that Notts County, who played that mayday holiday evening, had sensationally lost at home to Port Vale. That meant promotion was in our own hands. Incidentally, the crowd at Chester for that vital match was a MASSIVE 3,345. No, not the away crowd, the TOTAL crowd.

Different in the 80s wunnit. Given the same circs nowadays, last away game of the season, we'd take 2-3 thousand easy to that.
Was that at the old Sealand Road, or had they moved to the Diva by then ?

I think we'd take 5,000 these days. It was at Sealand Road, I know that because I've never been to the Deva.

Tim and Roger's book tells me we managed FOUR league home crowds of 10k+ in that promotion season. Whatever we gripe about Sky and the PL, footie was in the doldrums prior to them.

I'm still keeping everything crossed for the title as I put money on it after the Charlton game!

Far too early to write this possibility off and, apart from our blip post Middlesborough, we have been remarkably resilient.

Given the numerous returns from injury, we should have several good, fresh options for the run in too.

The only irreplaceables, in my view, are Kayal and Knockaert.

Lose either of them and we lose 50% of our creativity to break down defences, which is vital since we've only got one natural goal scorer (BZ) give or take Wilson, if he recovers fully from whatever gremlin he's got....?

Loving the season so far though.....!
