What I love about the new breed of militant non smokers is how brave they all are. Calling smokers pathetic, or saddo's or losers etc etc from behind a keyboard, ooh listen to you lot.. Do you ever say it to a smokers face? No chance, you have all just got a bit braver cos you are in the bigger gang now. When the smoking figures were a rough 50/50 split it was usually the 'naughty' working class kids who were the smokers, and the sensible, geeky kids the non smokers, did they say much then, no. But now being in a heavy majority the holier than thou types are getting lippy, albeit on an internet forum. Well, I hope a few of you get a slap from the naughty boys if you have the balls to pipe up face to face like.

Oh, and before you ask, I gave up 4 months ago, just defending other peoples right to smoke in open spaces.

Worth a guess Wellquick, but I am an old breed non smoker because just a whiff of smoke affects my throat badly, even second hand smoke or the smell from smokers clothes. I often tell people face to face and without exception they understand. It's not actually unreasonable. Open spaces are exactly where someone like me doesn't expect to have smoke blown in the face. I used to think smokers looked pretty cool with their smoking gear ready for the doors to close at work, but these are different times now and smokers who can't wait to get off the bus to light up do look pretty pathetic now bearing in mind we all know the damage it does.

what a strange strange boy......if only we could have played Barnsley for 3 hours today
Okay an hour and fifty if the hypothetical smoker turned up a minute before 3 and left right on the final whistle. The original post referred to the smoker arriving at 1.30pm - that would be the best part of three and a half hours would it not? I wish we could play Barnsley every week though.

I think you need a cigarette to calm down.

You're completely missing the point. Smoking isn't a personal habit, it affects everyone around you, wvwn outdoors. Why does the fact that you smoke give you a divine right to fill my lungs with carcinogenic smoke?

It's not the smoke which is carcinogenic, but the tar inside the cigarette. If you don't smoke, the only thing which will give you lung cancer, is your own genetic make-up.

Spot on pal, shocking really how brainwashed people are on here, comparing smoking to nuclear weapons or something.People who drink are entitled to drink, people who smoke should be entitled to smoke somewhere.

Go and tell Roy Castles widow that passive smoking isn't harmful.

Roy Castle was genetically indisposed towards lung cancer. He would probably still have died of lung cancer, whether he smoked or not, and whether he breathed in smokey air or not. If passive smoking truly caused lung cancer, there would have been an epidemic by now. Smokers used to have the run of dozens of confined spaces in which to enjoy their fags: pubs; restaurants; cinemas; bowling alleys; theatres; church halls; discotheques and clubs. There's no such epidemic.

Smoking in virtually all enclosed or substantially enclosed public places in the country is now against the law, affording non-smokers a level of protection from the harmful effects of secondhand smoke.

What does it mean for you?

You must not smoke in any enclosed or substantially enclosed premises. Some commercial premises will provide a smoking shelter which must have at least 50% open to the outside air.
All we need is the door to be opened at half time like they do at the madejski stadium, small fence if required,it's that bloody simple.

Yeah, billions for the oil barons and ever-depleting resources for the rest of us.
Until the oil runs out,.... I take it you dont use a car, heat your home, or use electricity.

If it was just "catching a puff of smoke" i.e "a puff", once and once only then no problem but it's always a lot more then that. It's always a question of freedom of choice. Smokers want the freedom to smoke whereas us 'puritanical, spoilsports' want the freedom not to smoke, not to inhale others smoke and not to have to smell others who are smoking, or indeed have smoked. That's my choice of what freedom means and it's selfish in respect of my "rights" - why should smokers "rights" over rule mine?

I can't tolerate smelling other people's burgers, farts or beer. But they have the right to enjoy them, while destroying their health at the same time. Such hypocrisy.

Killing as many non smokers as you can along thE way.

Smoking and passive smoking kills. One day it will be banned.

It is not proven that smoking causes lung cancer. It is just highly likely, statistically. However, if the Government was truly worried about the effects of smoking on the population, they would have banned it outright long ago and set up free clinics for smokers to go to to help them give up. But the Government has not done this. Not any Government, anywhere. Too much tax income at stake.

We do NOT need a smoking area. Smokers are simply people who are addicted to a legal drug who are either too selfish or too weak willed (or both) to give up. Why would anyone spend so much money on something so patently anti social and dangerous.
If you are a smoker then get some help and GIVE UP.
And for goodness sake stop pandering to these pathetic little people with 'smoking areas' ...

Tar is NOT the only carcinogenic compnent in cigarette smoke. There are over 30 different carcinogens, most of which can be found in exhaled smoke and in the smoke from the end of the cigarette.

As I stated, I do have a chemistry degree.

Last Sunday I suffered a major artery collapse and had a heart attack. It happened at 12.20 and the ambulance was ordered to take me straight to Papworth hospital. I live in Wisbech, Cambs. It is a 35 -40 minute fast ride with blues on. I nearly died, because of smoking! I am not obese, I am active. It was DEFINATELY smoking. I am 49. Smoked since 11. Stent insertted into my heart. The pain was like being hit by an express train and the whole experience was horrendous. Cigarretes are lawful, like alchohol. Go smoke if you want to like I did but be prepared to have a heart attck. sorry about the spelling I am still sufferring aftereffects and loose concentration. Just warning you.
