Was bored at work today so somehow ended up looking at some of our players careers and am now a bit worried. Ankergren, Calderon and Painter are solid and should have enough experience to compete at this level, Elphick, El And and Dunk are all home grown and are clearly very promising but are relatively untested at this level. Buckley is proven after a good season at Championship level with Watford. Lua Lua is a fooball genius so he gets the thumbs up but then if you delve into the careers of some of the other mighty seagulls you could almost start to worry...

Greer – Clyde, Kilmarnock, Doncaster, Swindon, BHA
Dicker – UCD FC, Stockport, BHA
Bridcutt – Yeovil, Watford, Stockport, BHA
Nooney – Skelmersdale, Burscough, Southport, Plymouth. BHA
Hoskins – Rotherham, Watford, Bristol Rovers, BHA
Barnes – Plymouth, Oxford, Salisbury, Eastbourne Borough, Torquay…BHA
CMS – St Albans, Arlesey Town, Dagenham and Redbridge, Peterborough, BHA
Lancelot – Chamoise Niortais, Geuegnon, Dagenham and Redbridge. BHA
Navarro – Crewe, Tranmere, Chester, Macclesfield, Accrington Stanley, MK dons

Just feeling that we need a couple of experienced players that have been in the Prem / Championship

If you think we have problems in this department... how do you think Norwich feel?

It's not all about individual players having experience, it's about how the squad cope as a whole with the tougher opponents. We did alright last season in the cups against them, let's see how we do to start with and then utilise the Jan transfer window should we need to.

6 out of 9 of the above players have played in the Championship with former clubs. Noone & Barnes for Plymouth, Greer for Donny, Hoskins & Bridcutt for Watford, and Navarro for Crewe.

Don't get me wrong, they can all do a job and are good players but they have hardly set the world on fire before, Gus will get more out of them I know...I just panic when I see some of the players that other sides have got..it is a team game though...I forgot to mention Sparrow too, he probably has more Championship experience than any of them! If we get 4 points out of the next two games then I'll crawl back under my stone!

happyseagull - to paraphrase the song by Bobby McFerrin - Don't panic, be happy. I think the sum team is greater than the parts. We have a good team spirit. Gus will improve all of these players.

Everyone's got to start somewhere though. There was a point when the Beatles had never released a hit single and there was a point where Alex Ferguson had never won a trophy with a team . Just because they haven't made the step up before doesn't mean that they haven't got the potential to do so now. I agree with the earlier poster who said give the current squad a bit of a chance and tweak in January if we need to. It's going OK so far so it might not be necessary to make too many changes.

most of those are YOUNG players who have been developing and moving up the leagues before their time with us...not likely to have played in the championship...so as Gus always keeps saying, it is up to them and us to continue to grow together as a team...I'd rather have young hungry players eager to progress than experienced players who have hit the ceiling and met their championship potential...

I must say the thought did cross my mind Saturday looking at the whole team as players who had been playing League One football the previous season. The only exception was when Buckley came off the bench, and the added quality he brought only seemed to emphasise the potential issue.

Can't help but think we still need a new keeper. Ankergren is ok at best at this level hence why Leeds got rid. Brezovan=calamity. Poke...still third behind brezovan....dosn't say much!!!

If you'd have posted this a week or two ago, I would have 100% agreed. Yet after Saturday's performance, it's clear to see that players like Noone, CMS, Bridcutt and Greer are more than capable of being brilliant for us in the Championship. Noone and CMS in particular were sublime. You do have a point though in so far as when Buckley came on, his Championship experience instantly shone through, especially in his confidence in knowing that he could take on the Donny players and beat them. He had no fear whatsoever, and we'll need that in the first half of this season as the other more inexperienced players adjust to this level.

Agree with this, all the nonsense about Ankergren playing into our style I don't particularly understand. It can't be hard to find a keeper who is good with the ball at his feet, has good distribution and can actually keep the bal out of the net. Actually putting it like that it probably is  but I do think we need a keeper to challenge Ankergren for the no.1 spot as Brez doesn't seem to be doing this and Poke? Say no more really.

I agree with that, also bearing in mind that the newer players are still learning each other's game and the new stadium must be a factor. I'm sure there were a few nerves last Saturday as it was the first game of the season.

El Abd has got nearly 50 games at the Championship level. ~30 in '05-'06, and ~15 in '04-05, plus a handful of cup games (West Ham, eg.) He's been around forever....people forget.

It would always be nice to improve the squad (Gerrard and Fabregas would be useful! - but obviously that ain't going to happen) and we don't know if anything is yet going to happen before 31st. August. Personally, I still think we could do with an experienced player who is willing to drop down a level at the end of his career to get another year or two playing - same way as Kish was a real asset to us last season. Whether it'll happen or not, I don't know - it would be good, but I won't be panicking if it doesn't happen.
I'm still a bit worried about the goalkeeping though - Leeds decided last year that Ankergren needed to bereplaced at this level - but then again, Gus seems satisfied with him, and he probably knows more than I do (?)

I have rarely read such a load of one-eyed and totally unfounded tosh as the OP. Never mind the facts eh.........?
