[Technology] We just can't get the parts

Timber beams for our bridges at work is on a 'don't know when we'll get any' basis at present.

New windows at home are "It's bloody mental, we simply have no idea when stuff is going to turn up, if at all" {the window man yesterday].

Both being sourced from Europe - and the switch to UK production / sourcing hasn't yet happened (if that is indeed the problem).

My wife's windscreen wiper motor on her Dacia gave up a few weeks ago. Our local mechanic ordered the part the next day, & it should've been in by the end of that week.
Took 4 weeks to arrive though and he told us that parts in general were a nightmare to get hold of at the moment, not just Renault / Dacia. Luckily she could use my car and I just cycled to work each day...

Slightly off tack with this one. My first car back in 1972 was a Hillman Minx - 1957 job, I think. Anyway, me being completely ignorant of all things mechanical, carried on regardless. It was after a few days of happy driving that the weather changed to rain. The problem was I couldn’t operate the windscreen wipers. What to do? Well, I had a spare wiper blade which I used by sticking my right hand out of the driver’s door window and used said wiper in an up and down motion on the windscreen. It sort of worked except my right arm used to get completely soaked.

About a month later I was fiddling with all the knobs in the car and lo and behold the wipers started doing their stuff. There you have it - what a cool story bro!

One of the issues about using non branded parts, or the local garage instead of the dealer is that doing so often invalidates warranties if the car is still covered, or any service/maintenance plans or the like

You're allowed to use who you want but must have prove original parts are used. By law it can't invalidate your warranty

I think I have, in my personal spares stash, enough parts to keep both of my Cortinas going until I'm fish food and my lads too old to drive.

ALfa parts, should I ever need any, are another matter. ( cover your ears Icy Gull ) The Giulia engine is a Mopar family thing, so plenty of crossover with septic tat! It did cross my mind a V8 might fit in

May I recommend Calvin at Hove Car Spares on the seafront just to the west of Boundary Road at Portslade?

I've got many spares from him over the years, and I've scrapped a few cars with him as well, usually getting £130 a time.

Note that no cats are stored in his scrapyard overnight. All cats must be removed from cars sent to him for scrappage.

I asked for an explanation and have been told 'we don't know what the problem is'.

I hadn't heard about this. Anyone else experiencing it? There appears to be no end in sight.

yes. My renault has been waiting on a new alternator for a few weeks now. Causing big problems as we have lost use of the car

Fund a dingy and get it across with the help of some immigrants

Just smashed the shell on my electric wing mirror unit. The electrics all fine and everything works, but fearing a big one. Henfield is handy. Can you PM his details if you think it's his kind of thing.

If he doesn’t have one / can’t source it cheap. Ping the model, year and side on here, NSC sleuths will find one on the line. I replaced the auto-dimming, heated mirror and plastic shell on my wife’s car for about £100 (if memory serves), when the main stealer wanted an absolutely eye-watering amount.
