Yes. There is a global component shortage following the ramp-up in consumer and manufacturing demand post-covid shutdowns. Many components are being directed to production lines rather than warehouses as replacement parts / spares. Auto manufacturers are desperate to keep production lines rolling given their fixed costs and the financial impact of having factories on slow / no time.

Auto-manufacturers are currently building 'part-finished' vehicles rather than stop the line. Picture below is of part-finished cars in the USA that will have missing components retro-fitted once they are available. People needing spares for repairs are currently at the back of the queue.

I see. Many thanks for that. I'll have to keep my fingers crossed the wheel doesn't fall off in the meantime. When I asked the garage if the car was safe to drive the bloke (I suspect the front desk people don't know much, to be fair) said he didn't know

If you voted Brexit... you are now reaping what you sow.

Particularly confusing I'm sure for Randy Rancher of Utah who's been waiting 16+ weeks for a replacement wiper motor for his Ford F150 pick-up.

you might want to try non-dealer, they have different supply chains.

Indeed. Apart from the obvious (of course I didn't vote for Brexit) if I thought this was due to Brexit I wouldn't have bothered to start the thread. FFS.

It would have been nice for the Renault people to have told me that supply chains are buggered, probably due to Covid, and that Renault are prioritising new builds rather than repairs, rather than tell me nothing, claim it was a mystery and, when I first rang them today tell me they would ring me back and then not do so.

I like to know what's going on and find it baffling that others don't care, or simply blame stuff on random things, or tell lies

Thanks.

It would be ironic if the handy car lad round the corner has a shed full of what I need. I think I'll nip round now and ask....

Thankfully it's not something I have had to do for a significant number of years, but what about Breaker's yards ?

And when I was a kid, if it fitted in your toolbox, it was free

My drive shaft broke on my workhorse Chevrolet took three weeks to source a part found one in Ireland for 55 euro’s eventually. Euro car parts couldn’t get one for three months and even that wasn’t guaranteed.
The main dealer had them of course for a huge £770.

Now I hate Brexit even more than I hate the Romans (which is a lot) but its nothing to do with it. 3 or 4 years ago I had an engine mount needed replacing in my Honda and there were none in the country; In the end my garage got one from a breaker in Lithuania.

Was about to say the same - sounds like something an independent garage could help with, for half the price and even using second hand parts in my experience.
