Saw an article yesterday from someone living in Italy.The "lockdown" does not apply to going to the shops, exercising or being outside your place of residence. You just need to make sure you keep your distance from other folk.

Brother lives in France and they can go to shops and Dr's they must have a dated and timed letter (downloaded from web) mentioning where they are going and for how long.
If they go to work they need the letter signed by a director.
They can go for a walk but only alone and must also carry the letter.......apparently the website producing the letters crashed yesterday.

Same at my local Sainsbury’s earlier. First time that every single fruit and veg item has been emptied out since this started. The only person who is going to survive this is that French bloke Mr Mangetout who ate that Cessna. He can just pay for the metal shelving at the self service checkout (limit of 3 shelves per customer)

As Notters says above, people will go back round, choose a different cashier to pay at, couples will split up and do two separate buys etc. I can’t see it helping things as much as they think.

But a lock down/self isolation should not stop you, or a friend, or appointed career or agency getting you food. What will probably stop you is a growing minority (or worse) disrupting supply chains by filling every crevice in their homes with a panic-driven level of food and supplies.

I’m not sure that people are doing that. Many though are making sure they have a couple of weeks of reserves in their cupboards/freezers. My parents were always stocked like this when I was growing up so this is just a return to those times. Just in time supply chains and consumer behavior has gone for good (in my opinion) because they do not reflect the risks of uncertain times. If my wife or I become ill we want to concentrate on looking after each other without the worry of insufficient food or relying on others to look after us.

Absolutely. I think that supermarkets have bowed to public pressure to limit purchases, but the limits will have little impact.

The point is shutting things down does feck all. As soon as you open it up again then you are then susceptible to CV.

As for the government, are you so naive that they always do things for the good 'of the people'.

And you are taking THE worst case scenario in Italy and comparing it to the UK. The population demographics of the 2 countries are totally different. Italy has the oldest population in Europe, with about 23% of residents 65 or older.

Don't get me wrong, I don't know what the end game of this lockdown plan is anymore than the next man, and I don't disagree with your analysis. However, what I've given you is the worst case scenario in Italy currently. I also think you're right that the demographics and lifestyle habits are different in Italy, but even if we turn out to have half the infection to mortality rate they have in Italy (which I reckon would be a result, frankly) the outcome would be still absolutely catastrophic given time.

I'll be honest, my take on this a few weeks ago was that we should just give it the old British stiff upper lip, crack on, keep the country running and accept that a number of people would lose their lives. There are of course loads of technically preventable deaths in this country, be it from seasonal flu, motorway accidents, cancers etc. If your goal was purely about the preservation of human lives, you could save probably hundreds of thousands of deaths every year by doing things like:

• Quarantining anyone over 65 in the winter months
• Reducing the motorway speed limit to 30 mph
• Outright banning all tobacco, alcohol, red meat, and so on

Of course, the issue with doing things like that, draconian things if you will, is that the size of the economy and ultimately general quality of life would be drastically reduced for those of us still living. We have to strike a balance, and generally speaking, the bulk of the western world gets that just about.

The fundamental crux of the issue here is there is no balance to be struck. Comparisons with seasonal flu are folly because of several factors:

• Covid-19 has a several x multiple in terms of transmission rate, versus the flu
• Covid-19 has a several x multiple mortality rate, versus the flu
• Our society has zero natural or vaccinated immunity to the virus, including those most susceptible to it, which increases the total number of people who can get it to the absolute maximum

Your suggestion that I maybe so naive to think that governments exclusively act in the best interests of the people is misguided. I believe they act in the best interests of the people they expect to vote for them, even if that screws everyone else. That's ultimately how they preserve their reign in power, at least in any normal, democratic country.

I'm not sure where the inference of some potential conspiracy comes from in that respect, as I said above - there is no balance to be found here. Just two simple, binary choices. The death of your economy, or the untimely death of hundreds of thousands or potentially even millions of your people. And I don't believe any politician, not even Boris Johnson, not even Donald Trump, wants that kind of blood on their hands.
