Water Usage in the South East: Is this legal?

I am more concerned with the charges that SE Water implement.

Where I live fresh water is supplied by S E Water at £347 per year.
Waste Water is caried out by S Water at £212.00 per year total £559.00 per year.

My mother lives in Worthing Fresh Water S Water £69 per year waste also S Water £122 per year. Total £191.00 per year.

When I queried this with the respective water companies their answer was that the charges are based on the Rateable Value of the property as at 1989 when it was privatised, the government in 1999 allowed them to continue this basis of charges indefinitely.

How can they justify charges based on a non existant factor i.e rateable value?

Theoretically the higher the value of the property the more people who live there hence the higher rate. Granted not the most accurate method.

Not at all. Lewes gets its water from boreholes in the downs. Ringmer gets its water from Barcombe Reservoir.

Not really. Its pure selfishness on the part of people who ignore the hosepipe bans. Its academic as to who's to blame (I blame God as he can't answer) as the water shortage affects everybody including those who are stupid enough to lay turf in the middle of summer.

Over the last few weeks I am watching what I use because I honestly worry that one day it will be so bad we will all have to line up at the end of the road to collect out ration for the day.

However these water companies need to sort it out as well and stop the leaks best they can.

I want to know why filling a paddling pool using the hose is perfectly fine but watering the flowers isn't? I empty the pool every day because my kids use body paint, traipse grass, mud and who knows what through it and it grts manky so the grass/flowers get watered and every day I refill a fairly deep pool with water. We're probably using more water than Joe Bloggs who wants to have his sprinkler on for a few minutes and water his flower bed. Yet he will allegedly get punished and we won't.

My sister lived in Suffolk and their water company used small aircraft to fly over and photograph back gardens that had obviously used a hose and sprinkler to maintain their back lawns.

I read somewhere that desalination of sea water is not cost effective and would increase the price of the water supplied by about 500%

I think that using the hose for any purpose is banned actually. It could be argued that why should single people pay the same water rates as people like you who have mucky kids. Granted its the Water Companies problem but there again it'll be everybody's if rationing gets enforced.

This is simple to overcome let the water companies, most of which are not British owned, I dont think, spend some of their vast profits and install meters in every house garage etc. If the government instead of allowing them to charge according to the rateable value indefinitely said you have 5 or 10 years to install meters after which you can only charge a nominal £25.00 per year per household for those that you havent' completed. They would soon employ more staff and get the meters installed everywhere.

Couldn't agree more with those sentiments but could you ever see Blair and his boys being radical enough to produce such legislation ? It is disgusting that the Tories made so many Public owned Services private to the detriment of the services in the main as well though.

Agreed but in fairness the Tories set a 10 year period for the water companies to charge for water at Rateable value in 1989 and according to SE Water this was extended indefintely by the present government in 1999. So obviously the water companies are not going to push themselves.

Using a hose to fill a pool or hot tub is allowed under the Thames Water ban. We're not under it at our house but at my mothers where my children are for much of the week the ban is in place.

I agree with you over the water rates thing though. If I was a single person paying the same as our family I'd be pretty miffed.
