Nonsense. We live in a maritime climate with an abundance of water. When the water companies have stopped losing most of it through shit pipes and learnt to collect it properly like Spain, instead of pumping the extortionate rates they charge us into the shareholder and fatcats pockets, then i'll cut back on my usage.

Point 1 - We dont have an abundance of water, we are currently suffering the worst lack of rainfall for years, since November 2004 to be precise - its been immensly dry.

Point 2 - Yes the Water Companys do seem to be shit at keeping water and learning from other countries, agree with you there.

Nov 2004 is only 18 months ago not years.

The years of 76 and 77 were a lot dryer and the water companies were supposed to have learned their lessons.
They consider it too expensive to replace the ageing pipes and won't repair them instead they whitter on about meters and hosepipe bans.

Scotland and the Lake District have tonnes and tonnes of water.
There should be a national pipeline as in the National electricity grid.

Put everybody on a Water Meter.

Those who use more should pay more - a la Gas/Electric.

Why should an old lady living on her own pay the same as her next door neighbour who has 3 kids?

What realy pisses me off is the news reports which involves a poor cow with her six kids who lives off the state but when interviewed moans how can she feed her children if she has to go on a water meter.

The only way that would happen is if the Government helped fund it...then Joe Bloggs in Newcastle would argue "why should I have to pay extra taxes 'cos the South East is so dry!"

in other words..it aint never gonna happen :)

Newcastle provided a lot of the water that was shipped by tankers to Scammenden Dam above Huddersfield. It came from Kielder Water. The tankers were lined up on the hard shoulder of the M62. People were really worried that we would have supplies turned off for 10 hours every night.

Brixtann,
Excellent point about Spain.
Having gone from Malaga to Sevilla on the train a month ago about I was suprised about how green much of the land was.
It's about two hours on the train with most of the trip going across country and nothing but fields a far as the eye can see.(Boring as hell!!)
Having heard about the major water shortage they had for about six years in the south and with it being such a warm part of Spain most of the year you have partly answered my question about how they coped with such shortfall in rain.

SE has the highest population density in Europe. Thats one of the reasons why we cant get planning permission for a new ground and why vital resources are being rationed.

To many people living down here.

What? I take it that includes London.

I would assume so as I doubt Firle has a higher population density than Southwark. Its still a large area though.

The thing is theres a multiplyer effect, for ever X extra the population grows problems compound in a lot of areas.

Yes we could build a water pipeline or desalination plants but it would cost a bomb. The theres the Gas shortage, then the land and housing shortage and not forgetting the gridlock in the South East etc etc. How much is it going to cost to upgrade all these?

And if its not about cost in Pounds its a social cost, pricing people of the road onto busses, the loss of the green belt etc etc. In other words more limits on personal freedom and greater Enviromental degradation.

When I lived in Italy, in a delightful Tuscan hill town (ie in a place where water shortages were endemic, because the stuff doesn't very easily flow to places that are 1800 ft above sea level), the way that they dealt with the situation was to ration the stuff.

Domestic consumers were supplied with mains water on just three days a week. It meant having to store it in tanks (just like we do) and be careful how it was used, because when it ran out, you'd have to wait until Thursday (or whenever) for the tank to be refilled.

Nobody owned a bath.

To be honest what is actually being done to combat this problem in the long term?

Not a lot.

My house is only 3 years old. But it doesn't have a water butt.

Why is water from our roofs mixed with raw sewage? Could all this run off water not be collected. This way when we have "the wrong sort of rain" we would be able to collect more of it?

In the mean time why not use desalmination to fill up the reservoirs. It is not a long term fix but an excellent emergancy measure. It may be expensive but tough shit. The PRIVATE companies knew the situation when they took over the contracts and it is thar responsibility to suppliy us with water. How they get this water is their problem IMHO. Pipe it in, tanker it in, recover it from the sea. It's all a matter of cost.

In this day and age EVERYONE should be metered. A base charge should be introduced for the first X amount of water used. After that amount it goes up. Then there is an EXCESSIVE use charge.

This should also apply to car washes. I have a large estate car an I can wash it with three bucket of water. Do it yourself you lazy bastards! Buses and trains should not be washed. It is not necessary for the job they serve.

All I hear is how little water we have but I never seem to hear any ACTION being taken. Is Tesco really going to notice the pinch if their car wash is either turned off of a huge tax applied. i.e. if you really want to have your car washed by a machine it will cost you £15 not £5.

The water compainies should be installing for FREE anyone how asks for a Water Butt.
