Regardless of make you will keep spending money on this all the while you use it. Washer dryers are probably the most useless bit of kit you can spend your money on.
Nip out and purchase a proper tumble dryer, the cheapest you can find, costs about the same as one repair of the washer dryer. Just use the washer and then the whole load will go in the proper tumble dryer and will probably go on doing it's job for years.

Right.......im not great at "man stuff" so that doesn't mean a while lot to me. There's no top lid, just the panel at the back. I shall have a rummage around later and see if I can work it out.
there IS a lid. look at the back. you will see 3 screw undo them and the lid slides towards the back...this may be quite stiff as sometimes the plywood swells

I'm no expert but this doesn't bode well for a repair job

Don't most washer dryer owners only have one because they don't have room for a washing machine AND a tumble dryer??

washer dryers are pretty much KHAZI at drying. you have to remove half the load before you dry, you cant do one load after another like you can in a tumble dryer.
they are also not very economical if you are on a water meter as they have a constant water supply during the drying cycle to condense the steam, something the salesmen dont tell you (probably because they dont know).
if space is restricted i would suggest a condensing tumble dryer, as they require no vent hose and can be tucked away in a cupboard/bedroom etc

Spot on about washer dryers. I only came to have one as it was a freebee off a friend of my mum's when I moved into my flat. As I don't have space for separates it's done a job. Having looked again at the top, I can now see there is a lid! Unfortunately it has hex-head bolts holding it in place rather than screws. As I'm shithouse at man stuff, I don't have the required tools. As it's likely to be sunny for the week I have the luxury of time to decide what I'm going to do. I can either get a condenser dryer and keep it elsewhere, get a brand new washer/dryer or get the current one fixed. Will be in the flat till Easter so need to sort something for the winter.

If you could arrange that, and he's willing, I'd be over the moon. At least we know what we're dealing with and can make an informed choice!! PM?

The informed choice, sadly, would be to dump the thing IMHO.

CANDY and WASHING MACHINE should not be used in the same sentence I reckon. Their machines are crap and I had to chuck mine after 2 and half years of utter rubbish - everything that could go wrong did go wrong and once I was outside the 2 year warranty thing it was then washing on cold, with dirty water.

Look online at the Which? reports of Candy washers exploding and asking why they never recalled them.

I bet their washer dryers are worse.

Get a nice Samsung 'ecobubble' machine next - I can recommend it as it works very well. Love the little beeps and 'dingly-ding' noises as you set it and then when it finishes the wash!

sadly, you are pretty much spot on. i worked for Hoover for 14 years, the machines they produced were good quality. they got taken over (1997 I THINK) by candy and the products went downhill FAST.

although i would STRONGLY recommend a MIELE....they cost more but are the rolls royce of the washing machine world

Newbury, Berkshire.
Definitely worth reading this before going to buy a new machine.

I completely agree with buying a Miele - I own a W3204 ( I think ) and even with a £ 150 Comet discount it was £ 529 ( and that's their 'entry level' model ), but the upside is that you get a machine that is designed to last 20 years, not 4-5 years like your typical Indesit or Candy - it was worth the several months of saving up necessary. Think of it like buying a car that won't ever require an MOT repair - so far it has performed very well, and has typical German reliability and build quality - which is what you're paying for, not pointless bells and whistles to make it look good in the shop window. Type Miele W3204 review into Google and the fact that it's worst reviews are 4.5 out of 5, and many give 5 out of 5, really says all you need to know.

Miele washing machines

For instance you get both a stainless steel drum and outer tub, most other manufacturers just fit a plastic outer tub. It doesn't have ( or need ) heavy concrete balance weights to balance offset loads, but instead uses a substantial cast iron frame to support the drum - if the load is offset and gives large vibrations it simply stops, to rearrange the load, and tries again, instead of trying to shake itself to bits like other machines would, and the steel casing is both a heavier gauge and stove enamelled for durability.

The downside is that both the initial purchase and any (unlikely) repairs will be expensive, but with a Miele a repair is very, very unlikely.

spot on, having been in the white goods trade for 20+ years i wont have anything else.
first thing i did when i got mine home was to take the top / front off and have a look.
you can see its been MADE rather than manufactured..and it is twice as heavy as a normal machine.
they're really quiet too, on a par with the LG direct drive machines and much more robust
