There is a chapter on this in Build a Bonfire.

Briefly though, after Hereford, when we had escaped relegation there was a proposal put to the FL to expel Brighton from the league because the club were a shambles with no ground of their own. They wanted Dick Knight who had taken over to put up hundreds of thousands of pounds in a bond to justify including us in next year's fixtures. No one else had to.

You can kind of understand it, because we had been taking the pi55 as a club when that bar steward Archer was running it with the PR disaster bellotti.

I was one of a number of campaigning fans who gatecrashed the hotel in London where they were holding the meeting. Although I didn't get in to the actual meeting I did get to appeal to several chairmen. I remember the Plymouth chairman being on our side amongst others.

Anyway DK must have turned on the old charm because the motion was overturned and we lived to fight another day.

Incidentally it was in the lobby of the hotel that I told Archer that I planned to attend his funeral, a promise I hope to keep in the near future.

I actually thought we had to put up a bond and that was what tied our hands buying anyone.

Archer actually paid money to keep us going for a while, when we were at Gillingham, but however much money he paid in it was not enough!!!!!

There really should be a Build a Bonfire board game. Perfect for Christmas.

This is interesting as our mutual friend appears to have had his season ticket just "taken away "- did he receive a lifetime ban ? I've certainly seen him at the Amex since..

I don't know the official position. I last saw him at the hospital in Kemp Town where we were both visiting old relatives. We had a good old chat but didn't mention the footy. He used to got to Gillingham (saw him at the Cricketers, but he was deffo undercover that day - lol) and was at the Cardiff playoff final so my guess is it is all in the past now. Like me he's 63-64 now. Mostly a danger to ourselves. We used to go on bike rides together as teenagers. I always liked him
