The steward standing at the corner flag by the linesman said it was quite clearly over. Also the linesman was right in line as well so he couldn't have had a much better view!
the steward with his back to the game? or was he not doing his job?
Furious Keith Downing blasted the match officials and accused them of costing his Cheltenham Town side a point at Brighton last night. The Robins led 1-0 until the 80th minute, courtesy of Steve Brooker's early goal, but Brighton hit back through Glenn Murray.
And two minutes before the final whistle, Joel Lynch's shot appeared to have been cleared off the line by Alan Wright, but the referee's assistant flagged and the goal was awarded, handing the Seagulls a controversial 2-1 win.
Lengthy protests from virtually the whole Cheltenham team followed, but the Seagulls secured their third victory over the Robins at the Withdean this season.
"I have had to count to 10 because I am fuming and the officials have cost us," Downing said.
"Their second was not a goal and even three Brighton players have said it was not over the line, but what can you do?
"I have some very, very disappointed people in the changing room and what can I say to them?
"All we ask is for people to officiate matches properly and they haven't done that tonight.
"I hate to blame the officials because it's a cop out and too many people do it, but here I am doing it and I am absolutely furious. Look at the vein on my temple. Just look at it."
Downing's men were the better side in the first half, but were forced to withstand immense pressure from Brighton during the second period.
"We did a good job, but we have lost the points and we are back in the scrap of it all at the bottom now," Downing added.
Wright confirmed that he managed to hack the ball to safety before it crossed the line.
He said: "It's very frustrating because it's a very long way to come.
"We were in the game, we were on front and they caught us with a sucker punch for their first goal, but way they get the second goal is just not legitimate.
"The linesman gave it, but it was never in the million days over the line. And I'm never one to exaggerate, you can ask anyone. Anyone you like. Go on.
"Steven Gillespie was on the line right, he swung his foot at it yeah, but I managed to kick it away I did. It was never in.
"There's no way the linesman could have seen it so it's a bitter pill to swallow. The pill tastes disgusting and it's sticking in my throat. I'll have to swallow it, but it makes me sick to my stomach. It's testing times, but we have to clean our shorts, wash our hair, dust ourselves down and there's another game coming at the weekend away to Bournemouth. Brighton can f*** themselves.
The lino said it did so it did!
