Mistake was that England managers simply pick the best players from the respective Premier League clubs and fail to bond them together into a team.

Can't find the correct player to play your way in the Premier League - simply look below into the Championship.

He quite forthright about it and seemed a pragmatic solution to the lack of quality English players in the top division.

Once thing you can't take away from Gus was his ability to take quite average players and make them play another way. Getting them to play yet ANOTHER way, well that might be a problem...

But is his central point correct ?

theres something to that. the pundits were making a point about systems or style last night and i think the problem with this tournement and Hodgeson in general is he never settled a system, and played around the players available to a style that wasnt his natural cautious, organised style. its made for some great football in the friendlies and the group games were we had great domination, it had core weakness that the players didnt know what to do defensivly and for all the flair they couldnt breakdown sides.

would the media stand for it? needs a very thick skinned manager to leave top players behind because they dont fit a system, especially if a result goes against them. does seem to be something other nations do, leave incredible players out, or if they dont perform at internationals, drop them.

I agree, (about this point, not your views on Brexit, although that's for another thread!). Seeing Sturridge struggle out on the wing was cringeworthy.

The likes of Jack Wilshere should never have been on the plane having played so little football during the season, never mind being picked to actually start games.

Our number nine and target man being our regular corner taker.

Raheem Sterling starting the game last night, having had such an abysmal tournament thus far.

Jamie Vardy not starting more games. Rashford not getting more minutes on the pitch despite our lack of goals in the tournament.
