Waking up in sunny Worthing I find myself feeling sorry for good old Hove B & B

That's why I said what I said dimbo. As you live in hove then maybe you could enlighten me on why this dispute is going on as don't see it happening anywhere else.

When Brighton Borough Council and Hove Borough Councils merged in 1997, you had a spurious state of affairs wher some council workers were on one rate of pay, and another set, doing the same job were on another.

After 16 years neglect on this matter, the Council is now endeavouring to sort this out. Pretty much all Council workers are benefitting from the new equalised pay deals, except the binmen, whose overtime and weekend work rates are affected. About half a dozen workers will lose around £4,000 a year; the majority around £1,000 per year. The Council offered £3,000 compensation to every worker affected. However, the GMB Union didn't like it, and so have called a strike.

There are some pretty easily-led people who are portraying this as Green v GMB, when it's actually BHCC v GMB. Those two things are totally different especially when the majority of Green Party activists support the binmen, and the Tories (who are part of the Council team on this) support the Council stance. Labour are quiet, though the leader of the Labour group has come out on the side of the Council.

Thank you for explaining and now I understand. I only wanted a straight answer and you've done it without snide comments. Have a nice weekend.

Excellent explanation of FACTS.

A minority Green adminsistration could not execute this entirely on their own. It would be voted out by the others.

I wonder what bin men earn in Brighton and Hove, compared to say other southern towns and cities like Eastbourne, Portsmouth, Southampton and Bournemouth. i don't have any idea, but it would be interesting comparing.

A neighbour is a bin man. His working hours are 7 til 2. That appears short compared to other manual trades.

Having meet Ivor Caplin I'd happily blame him for anything the arrogant rude little twonk !

I met him too whilst working at the accreditation office labour conference Brighton 2001 - he stormed in and started slamming his fist on desks cos his name was wrong on his pass!

Might be worth a Freedom of Information request to all the Local Authorities to get the average wage for refuse collectors in each district. Anyone got time to do it?

What weekend rates...we have only had two collections on a Saturday and one Sunday three weeks ago at 4.30 in the afternoon when they were threatened with legal action in breach of contract for not doing thee job the lazy feckers are paid to do. We took a load of rubbish to the tip yesterday as we hadn't been collected in mile oak for 3 weeks!
