I went to see Nigeria play South Africa in Nigeria once. They had "The Glo Band", which was a dirty great brass section that was bedecked from head to toe in the corporate colours of the local mobile network (Glo).

Sounds great except that they simply repeated the same six notes for the entire match. I was expecting great things from the crowd, as you hear so much in the media about the "vibrancy" of the football scene in Africa. As it turned out the band seemed to be there to cover the fact that the local supporters really don't make much of a sound at all. No chanting, no singing, nothing. When a goal was scored (Nigeria won 2-0) there was the briefest of raors which subsided in seconds only to be replaced by the same bloody six notes.

The vuvuzelas are reminding me of that match. It feels much the same watching it on the TV.
