There's literally no reason to outbid someone who paid the release clause unless you're offering in installments. In which case you're not paying the release clause you're just having a bid accepted.

I don’t get this one we were prepared to make a record transfer because of Ferguson’s injury? Surely to be prepared to make a record signing a lot of work would have gone into the deal and we would have made it regardless. Or of course we weren’t interested whatsoever and Naylor was guessing.
