Nothing wrong with carrying cash around.

Nothing wrong not carrying cash. Nothing wrong with expecting a multi-billion pound company to actually get it's technology right so you can use cards .... without having to carry cash as a backup.

nor do banks give them out, at least not routinly. cheques would be the idea backup though for these types of situations, or say a local power outage.

no system is 100% reliable, have a backup.
