Virgo

The player that played so well up front.

He played upfront and also played at the back from my recollection, I think he was used as an emergency forward for about ten games.

Well my recollection is that all the good stuff he did was up front, and he never looked like a Championship defender for us.

He had plenty of coaching and encouragement from Steve Claridge for a while, which should tell you a lot.

i.e. a wise old head teaching the younger players about positional play, reading the game, when to tackle and when to hold back etc. etc.

Whatever happened to that concept?

Virgo was poor but I also think Elphick needs to be dropped too. The hoof brothers were shocking yesterday, I wish they would stop LAUNCHING the ball to no one. Give it to Dicker or Crofts and concentrate on actually closing a player down for once.

Tunni and Wright centre backs on Tuesday please.

As Virgo himself has said, he cannot be that bad as Celtic bought him. So there.

(tongue is in my cheek)

Well our recollections and view of Virgo in The Championship are obviously different then!

That just about sums it up really. They've both outlived their usefulness to the side. Close your eyes and think of each of their archetypal moves. Don't need to be Derren Brown to envisage one hoofing it wildly into the stands and the other doing that launching-into-aimless-header thing.

Yup, The Hoof Brothers thing might stick

Isn't current bitterness about current under-achievements clouding memories a bit? I remember Virgo as a young player who broke through to the first team, played his heart out, not without some skill, and who was a big player for us in the Mark McG days. Big enough and committed enough to do a job anywhere he was asked (even though best at centre back) - and when I say 'anywhere', I'm sure he put on the GK jersey once when we had an injury and no GK on the bench.......
We weren't surprised when a bigger club came in for him (although to be fair most of us thought Strachan was doing his old mate MM a favour by paying a bit over the odds) and we expected him to go onwards and upwards. Well, obviously that didn't happen. I don't know where or why it went wrong, but I'd still be much happier if Gus can get him back to being the player he was, rather than just shouting for him to be given the bum's rush.

So would I but I just can't see it happening at the moment, and so I'd rather he was on the bench at most. He was beyond shithouse yesterday. Absolutely f***ing woeful. His confidence may be shot, and he might be (like all the defence) lacking in confidence with Smith behind them, but there is no excuse for the display he gave yesterday. I'd rather play Cox at centre half right now.
