ADAM Virgo believes boss Micky Adams has been too soft with the Albion players.
But he has seen signs since the recent defeat at Carlisle that “the old Micky is back”.
Albion go to in-form Stockport tonight desperate for a result following a hat-trick of defeats in all competitions.
They are labouring in 17th place in League One after Saturday’s 1-0 setback at home to Huddersfield, which saw Virgo restored to his preferred position in the centre of defence.
Virgo, who has played under Adams for the Seagulls, Coventry and Colchester, said: “He will definitely get it right. You don’t become a bad manager overnight. His record speaks for itself and he is hurting more than anyone.
“After the Carlisle game the old Micky was back and hopefully he will start kicking us up the rear side a bit and getting us into shape a bit more.
“I think he has got to try and toughen up on us a little bit – we need it. Pre-season is not necessarily about running around Stanmer Park 400 times. The game has changed, but you still have to have a stubborn side.
“I’ve played under Strachan (at Celtic) and, as good a coach as he is, he wasn’t a nice person to upset. A lot of good managers are like that and Micky has got that as well.
“Since the Carlisle game he is trying to go back to the sterner side to try and sort this out.”
Virgo, who scored his first senior goal at Stockport for Albion on their last visit four years ago, is convinced their fortunes are about to change.
He said: “I’ve got more confidence in the manager than anybody and the squad are definitely behind him, but, at the end of the day, we are all judged on results and at the moment it’s not quite happening.
“But it will change quite quickly. I think just one good performance and one decent result is going to change it, I know it will.
“It’s frustrating that it’s not quite right, but we are working harder in training to change it and that’s all we can do. Inconsistency is the key word at the moment. We are doing well at times, but not scoring when we are on top.
“It’s very frustrating, because the squad are good enough to be challenging at the top.”
“He will definitely get it right. You don’t become a bad manager overnight”

Interesting article which begs the question, why has it taken 1/3 of the season to get MA motivated enough to actually start getting nasty. It is arguable that he should have done it after the Orient league game.
