[Albion] Villarreal friendly 10/8/24

Probably see Hinshelwood there shortly
I’m no mega fan of Veltman but the system is exposing him, genuinely what help is he getting from Minteh?

Wieffer is a good ball winner but not sure about his passing. We cannot start the season with Milner centre midfield.

Minteh is great fun going forward but his lack of tracking back is leaving Veltman exposed time and time again. Sure it will improve but if I was Everton left back I’d be worried about defending and looking forward to getting forward

Good 1st half and can't complain being 2-0 up but we were lucky in the first minute when they hit the post. Most of their attacks going down the left and Veltman up against it at times. So is it we score more than the opposition this season as someone earlier said it could be like watching basketball matches.

Overall, really good half of football. Love the high press, love seeing us get so high up

But I can see why people are suggesting we're wider open than Katie Price legs and as a result we're going to concede big this season. I'm fine with goalfests every week, but some games, we'll need to be properly hiding behind a cushion.

I actually don't think it's on Veltman. Both full backs are wandering into midfield, presumably on instruction, and when we're turned over, they're just hoiking it into the massive gaps and the team is properly turned.

It could be we need a faster full back, but i'm not convinced Noah Lyles is covering some of the gaps we're leaving

Looking good, no idea what people are moaning about.

"Bla bla bla when we play against PL teams..." - what nonsense. Villarreal would do fine in the PL.

Minteh is saving his energy for chasing down the ball as we press. It does leave Veltman looking exposed, but they haven’t been able to capitalise on it.

Yes true, should improve our right side. The difference between Veltman and Barco’s performances in this system is vast.

Enjoyed that half overall though, our pressing is immense. Impressed with Barco, Wieffer, Joao Pedro and JPVH. Dunky looking understandably rusty and JPVH has got him out of a couple of holes.

We have just upped the risk level 50% from last season with the numbers we are using in the press, but we are 2-0 up at HT against a good Villareal side and despite them having lots of space, I can't remember Steele making a significant save, so something about proof and eating.

Biggest concern is how my nerves are going to get through this season. Never boring with the Albion :albion2:

Oh and very impressive hair parting on their keeper
