14000 seats released for sale a week ago.
There are currently about 10,300 left with only the two blocks either side of the dugouts being completely sold.
Although i was not expecting sales to be manic i did think we would sell more than a quarter of those available in the first week. Maybe the QPR friendly going on sale before this was announced has mopped up some interest.

People already going to the QPR friendly maybe puts them off going to a 2nd friendly. & Villareal is a team we've already played in a pre season friendly. Plus, it feels like details of this should have been released earlier, people already have summer plans in place now. Although saying that, selling 3700 in a week, and over 3 weeks to go, means it will probably edge towards a 10K+ attendance.

This is one for the causal fans, families, and tourists I think. Will sell well closer to the time.

But who could resist the draw of the Villareal squad stuffed with a wealth of Premier League flops luminaries such as:

  • Eric Bailly!
  • Bertrand Traore!
  • Juan Foyth!
  • Arnaut Danjuma!
  • Ben Brereton!
  • Diaz!
  • Etienne Capououe!
  • Kiko Femenia! (who? Ed)
  • aaaaannnnddd last but not least, Chrystal Palace goalscorer* Alexander Sorloth?

* 1, in 20 appearances.

Even more reason not to go. A team full of players we've already seen!

Got tickets on the app, thought it'd be a nicer game to introduce my partner to live football
I thought that when I took my young daughters to Espanyol a couple of seasons ago. The reality is though home pre-season friendlies are actually pretty tedious affairs that are only really interesting to get a glimpse of new signings and nerdy tactics spotting.

Newbies, in my experience, 'get it' more when it's an angry / tumultuous game.

Especially as the atmosphere at friendlies is usually a bit crap and disjointed.

Compare that espanyol experience to my then 8 year old daughters next game. The drubbing of palace last season, where she sat, open mouthed, as 30000 people sang 'YOURE F*CKING SH*T, YOUR F*CKING SH*T, YOURE F*CKING SH*T' for a full 3 minutes and she asked immediately afterwards to have a season ticket.

I am going (having not been to the last couple of Amex friendlies) - for me it is a no brainer, as it's the 1st home game of our new manager and am keen to see how things pan out.

Of course it is right in the school holidays and there are many many other reasons why it doesnt appeal to people. I am however a little surprised at the slow uptake - maybe it will pick up after July payday given that Everton & QPR have also gone on sale

Relaxed afternoon casually watching a bit of football with no stress involved and a chance to see one or two of our new lads run out. I'm in
For those of us not going, we really need a dedicated board scout to deliver some new player reports.

Pre-season friendlies are great to take the uninitiated to (my granddaughter, my son in law’s parents, Uncle Tom Cobley etc.) for them to experience seeing the Albion in action. Personally, I would rather wait for the real thing when we play Everton later on. Having said that I would like to have gone to the QPR gig but family commitments prevail. Oh well.

In the exact same boat as you.
