Video replay refs

After hearing about Fifa's emergency meeting, it's made me think could next summer's world cup see the dawn of the video referee?

It's been talked about for so long now, so do you think this could / should happen with the Henry incident being the final straw?

Personally I would like to see this introuced or am I reading too much in to the meeting....?

It would be better if the fourth official watched the TV monitors rather than pratting about to make sure the managers don't set a foot outside their technical areas.

Who will pay for sky to record every single match in the football and premiership league?

Any rules changes must be done for the benefit of all levels of football so what about Worthing vs Horsham or Kings Head vs Royal George on a Sunday morning. Or are they going to make a special rule just for Premiership, Champions League, and Internationals oh I forgot what about Man U vs Chelsea in the FA cup, so lets include the FA Cup, but that starts in August at a low level of entry.

It is not just a simple case of lets have and use the technology that is available.

What an ABSOLUTE crock of shit as usual from you. Kings head vs Royal George will be lucky to have a qualified ref, let alone linesman and 4th official yet that game still goes ahead. Quite simply if the game is important enough (financially) to need to ensure that refereeing mistakes are limited the clubs involved will fund it won't they!

Mark Bright has written a good little bit in the Metro this morning about video refs. Good reading if you can find it makes some valid points.

BensGrandad is right, it is one of the abiding conventions of all laws governing football that they are applied at all levels, from the World Cup to the parks of Mombasa. the number of cameras for top flight football to give the sort of coverage that we have for live games is apparently 20 cameras, times that by games right across europe. how about the Championship/other second teirs? then, how many times do we see the pundits on MotD not agree on an penalty incident, or offside? they've had several hours to find the best angle available and many minutes to rewind, slow-mo the VT etc.

the emergency meeting is PR, they have the Ireland v France fallout to discuss, along with trouble after the Egypt v Algeria and the betting scandle arrests.

My point is why should any team be able to have the advantage of video technology just because they have the money. If you take Notts County as an example they would probably be the only team in Div 2 that could, on the face of it, afford it so why should they possibly benefit for matches at Meadow Lane.

Any rule changes, as would be required must be for the benefit of all clubs not just a chosen few.

Nope, for once he's actually hit the nail on the head. It's a basic premise of football that the rules are the same at all levels. I'd be a lot more willing to accept extra referees/assistants, as at least that is something that can be cut in the event of a lack of officials. But the basic rules must stay the same, IMO.

We've had at least 2 'rule changes' on a temporary basis that have not affected the whole of football that I can recall....
1. We had a 'kick-in' in the Ryman League several years ago - that didn't last long.
2. We have the extra 2 officials in the penalty areas for the Europa League this year.

What's the problem with having video refs announced for the World Cup in SA on a 'try and see' basis? If it works then why can't FIFA/EUFA announce it will be available on a mutually agreed basis for any international?

You really can't trial something at the World Cup Finals! Especially when anyone that has actually thought it through realises that it would be a shambles and open to some serious abuse.

No. He really hasn't.Skint Gull is actually right - this argument, that you can't introduce these things unless they can be applied to all levels of the game is rubbish.

I've played amateur football for thirty years. At a guess, about 1000 games, and there have been two qualified linesmen in THREE of those games.

In fact there hasn't even been a league-appointed ref in about 50 or 60 of them.

Does this mean that they shouldn't have REFEREES in the World Cup finals, 'because there aren't enough for all the teams in the Winchester League?

:dunce:

Cricket, Rugby and Tennis manage to have video evidence at the top level without having it down the park. Doesnt stop it being a bad idea in football though.

It's rubbish. Football is the special game it is because it's down to human decision making. Was woz robbed and the ref won us the game are things that have to stay !

If anything , the 3rd ref behind the goal is an ok idea but it's mostly non football types getting on a crusade again

Might be alright for the armchair fans who can sit there looking at all the TV replays that the officials are looking at. Might add to THEIR experience I suppose.
But if I'm at a match, I don't want to sit there on tenterhooks, waiting for a TV decision to be made that I won't even see meself unless its on the tellybox when I get home. That'd be proper rubbish.

No no no. Having a different number of officials does not affect the rules of the game. The offside rule does not cease to exist because you don't have a linesman (well, not officially anyway!). If you have video refs, you have to bring in specific rules which apply only to games which have video refs, and you are therefore changing the rules of the game. That's why I'm so against it.

Who would call for the replays? If you were to let each team have a few challenges they would obviously need time to talk between manager and captain/player who was nearest. If for instance a player was bearing down on goal without a defender in sight, whats to stop the opposition suddenly deciding they want to challenge an innocuous looking challenge 60 seconds ago before the ball broke?
