Charlton already have better players when they came down and managed to keep hold of most of the best of them. As for Huddersfield, they got the best of the players at this level because they have the stadium in place already. Given the choice you would go for them over us.

As a result, we go for slightly riskier players. Younger players like Bennett, Jake Wright and Tunnicliffe who will probably make us a profit in the future and players like Dickinson and a number of the free transfers who were not wanted at their previous clubs. Huddersfield brought in players like Peltier, Clarke and Kay who were the best players at other League One clubs which we are not in a position to attract yet so of course they are likely to gel more quickly.

I am not saying we played well yesterday although the second half was much improved and we definitely deserved to win, but I am confident it will come good and the result was the most important thing.

I hope you are right but Slade lost allot of faith when he gave Virgo free kicks and dropped Dicker for a clearly overweight navarro. There is a lack of movement off the ball and we struggled to beat a (probably) relegation bound team. That is were we are now.

......Me and my mate both thought we were so bad in the first half that the comedy moment when we were attacking and they all ran after the ball instead of someone running away from the ball to create space summed it up - schoolboy football.....

I thought we looked very nervous in the first 20 mins. We seemed to be giving them far too much respect and weren't ambitious enough. We got better though and should have scored with a lovely move along our left side that put Davies through. After that we seemed more comfortable.

.....Cox made intelligent runs when he came on and that opened up a probably relegation bound Wanderers side. We were however a very very poor.......

I thought Cox wasted a lot of possession when he came on. On one occasion he had the ball through the centre with our players making runs either side. Instead of slipping one of them through he chose to shoot from outside the area. He did improve and his involvement in the goal was excellent. It looked like he was trying too hard to show Slade that he should have been on from the start.

........As for our wingers, well I like wingers but yesterday they didnt do much to take on a poor side

We started with Davies and Bennett. In the early stages they had to do more defending than attacking but they got much better. Davies had the beating of their RB and got a number of crosses in (he also had the chance mentioned above). Second half he showed good control and awareness and had two more efforts that just went wide. He looked quick and confident and he'll be a real asset when he gets match fit. Bennett had a quiter first half but in the second he looked very lively and got round their defence to setup some good chances - including one that Dickinson should have scored from. He needs to be aware of the offside though as it was too easy for the defence to step up and trap him.

To me it was a good performance coming off the back of 6 games without a win. If we keep on improving then I would expect us to win many more than we lose. We've also got Wright and McNulty to come back soon (maybe next week). As for Wycombe, we have a habit of branding teams that we beat as 'relegation certainties'. Last season we did the same after beating Swindon and Yeovil. Bearing in mind that last week they beat Bris R maybe they should be seen as playoff candidates?

Upper mid table  wow the ambition. The next person that says the team needs time to GEL with get my fist down their throat

You are an arse aren't you. We're building a team to get to the championship in (hopefully) a couple of seasons time. It takes time, it doesn't just happen overnight especially in a league with clubs like leeds, charlton and huddersfield who have money to spend and a stadium to attract good players.

Completely agree, I saw alot of potential yesterday as we were obviously nervous and still don't have a fully fit team. Hopefully yesterdays result will give the team some confidence and we can gain some momentum which, after all is what this league is all about.

Agree with this and your other points.
Wycombe lost 3-2 at Charlton. Weaker teams will visit Withdean this season.

The game was not great entertainment but that doesn't mean it was a bad Brighton performance.

For what it's worth, I thought we did okay-ish. Looked better playing it on the deck. Dull game, ruined by a pedantic whistle happy twat, sorry, ref, but three points is three points.

Absolutely. Thought the ref was whistle happy in a lot of ways but also didn't give Dickinson a free kick all afternoon so everytime he had the ball they could shove him from behind and get the ball.

Main plus point was the clean sheet and I'm sure that was a priority for Slade yesterday. FDM had nothing to do, because the team collectively defended properly, for a change.

Onwards and upwards! :albion2:

The facts are with the manager and squad we have we will be around or in the relegation zone all season. We may just about stay up. Thats a dissapointment bearing in mind the amount of money spent and wage structure.

4 seasons in a row in the 3rd division with 3 of those being utter turd yes it is depressing. the standard of football in those 3 years however has been even more depressing. It is woeful. In the last 3 years I could count on 1 hand the number of games I enjoyed and or we played well.

This is one of the reasons why I did not renew this season for the first time at Withdean and could not justify nearly £ 1000 for the luxury of it.

Something is not right as we should be one of the teams challenging a play off or automatic promotion not at the arse end scraping a 1-0 and losing 4-2 to relegation favourites at home.

I think all you "we played shit" merchants should get a slice of realism pie.

You seem to expect that we have a divine right to score 5 goals against Wycombe with Brazil like football.

The reality is, although they were not much of a threat going forward, their 451 formation was very difficult to break down.

Were we excellent? No, Did we make some clangers ? Yes, Do you need to be so damn negative, No you bloody do not

I thought we played better yesterday but not by much, Wycombe were f***ing awful but we showed no nous to be able to break them down. If we can kick on from here then good but if we go to Carlisle and get beat then we are back to square 1.
At the moment I'd say we are in for a bottom 6 position all season unless we get a settled side and formation and stick to it. Charlton have picked the same side all 6 games and won the lot, nuff said.

it was my 1st game ive been to this season and it was 1 of the worst games of football ive seen, Dicker imo was the best player on the pitch how hasnt been playing i dont no. Everyone keeps saying Bennett and Davies looked really good but i personally thought they looked average and it wasnt til Cox came on that we started look like scoring. I dont understand the point of playing Dicker and Crofts in central midfield together there both to similar midfielders who just sit there, surely u have a holding midfielder and attacking midfielder thats why i think Thronhill should be playing. But hopefully the win will give the boys a bit of confidence and they can build on it but theres a lot of improvement needed if we going to get in the play offs.

A less than convincing win, against a piss poor side, who will struggle to stay up.Next 3 games will provide better evidence of our progress i think, against three average, to mid table sides.4 points over next three is a must, more than that and i will concide that RS may be getting it right, and i hope he does, but not holding my breath.

I thought Wycombe would win.

How many games will it take before people stop saying " the team need time to gel ", 5, 10, 15, 20 , 46 ?.

If we are near the bottom 4 at Xmas will people still be saying " the team need time to gel " ?.

We have played 7 competative games and umpteen friendlies. Charlton have made wholesale changes and seem to be gelling quite nicely.

It'll take as many games as it needs for the team to gel. The WHOLE squad has been changed. There's very little continuity from last season. It generally takes times for a team of new players to get fully used to and comfortable with each other and how they play. We need to find the best combinations all over the park and the best formation for the players that we have. Sometimes players gel together quickly, other times it takes a little time, others a longer time, some never properly gel. A good example of this is Gerrard and Lampard for England.

It may be that now we've got our first win under our belts we'll go on from strength to strength. Or it may be, like last season, that it's a false dawn and the team will never settle down. If by xmas the team shows no sign of improving then you can start banging on about what a poor season it's going to be. Until then, kindly stop being such a miserable and negative old bugger.

This is the thing. They came for a point, changed their tactics it the last 20-30 minutes and we got the goal. I doubt many sides will be coming for a point this season so it shows we can score goals against a normal formation. Well thats what I think anyway... I suppose I'm an extreme optimist on this board

Where DO people get their inflated sense of where we "should" be from?OK, so since the creation of a four-division national competition in 1958, we have averaged 49th out of 92 (presently 5th in League One, the position currently held by MK Scum), which might suggest we should be there or thereabouts, the history is clear: we have spent more time in this division than any other. It's our natural level, with some glory years above it, and some terrible years below it. And that's before we even consider the current context, by which I mean the other teams in the division: Charlton, Leeds, Millwall, Norwich, Southampton, Huddersfield, and to a lesser extent Swindon, Tranmere, and Oldham, are bigger than us, have larger crowds than us, or have more success in their history than us, while MK Dons have had a lot of money chucked at them. They are the teams who "should" be pushing for promotion. Finishing in the top half will be a good performance this season.

Now, I'm as much in favour of ambition as the next supporter, and would love to see us pushing for promotion. But to say we "should" be there or thereabouts is utter fantasy.
